Application Process

Identify and contact a prospective supervisor directly to determine if they are accepting new students, to confirm that their research interests matches yours, and to discuss funding options should you not secure your own funding. Please note, a positive response from a supervisor does not guarantee admission into the program. Please refer to our BME Graduate program approved BME Faculty supervisors list. Please refer to our FAQs to assist with the administrative process.

Submit the completed online application keeping in mind the application deadlines above.

After completing the online application, you are required to send the remaining documents directly to:

University of Calgary, Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program

Mailing and office address

Faculty of Graduate Studies
Earth Sciences, 1010
2500 University Drive NW
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
T2N 1N4

For ALL Applicants:

  1. One copy of official transcripts* from all post-secondary institutions attended.  Transcripts must be in sealed envelopes and mailed directly to our office from the granting College or University.
  2. Two Academic references - the online system will send an invitation to your referees to complete their reference directly upload to your application.
  3. Student to confirm and receive a letter from a prospective faculty member who is willing to supervise you.

*If your transcripts do not note the date when your degree was awarded, we require a certified copy of your degree certificate.

International Applicants require these ADDITIONAL documents:

  1. Official TOEFL, IELTS, or MELAB scores. Refer to Faculty of Graduate Studies website for minimum scores required.
  2. Two certified official translations of all transcripts and/or degree certificates that are not in English. Translations must be in sealed envelopes and mailed to our office directly from the granting College or University.

You can track your admission status through the online application account you created at the time of submission. Here you will be able to monitor which supporting documents have been received by our office and what stage of the process your application is in. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure all required documents are received prior to the deadline or as soon as possible to ensure your application is reviewed and evaluated in a timely manner.

Applications will only be reviewed when the online application is complete and all official supporting documents are received. Students are encouraged to complete their application prior to the deadline.

Final admission is dependent upon approval by a prospective supervisor, the availability of financial support either from the supervisor or an internal/external scholarship and the final approval from the BME Graduate Program Admission Committee.

All graduate students and their proposed supervisors are encouraged to apply for internal/external funding. A limited number of Graduate Research Assistantships are available on a competitive basis through several sources. Refer to the Faculty of Grad studies Awards & Scholarships section for funding opportunities. Other project specific awards are also available; please contact your supervisor for more information about these awards.

Note on Admission to the BME Graduate Program

There is no general right of admission to graduate programs. All graduate programs have limited enrollment capacities, and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Each graduate program determines whether to recommend the admission of a particular applicant to the Faculty of Graduate Studies based not only on the applicant's credentials, but also on the availability of resources for supervision and research, departmental research objectives, program balance, and other such considerations. Applicants who do not meet the above requirements will only be considered under exceptional circumstances.
