Eligibility

Established Investigator

Intended for established researchers with demonstrated expertise and a strong record of peer-reviewed publications.

First Award

Intended for early-career investigators establishing their first independent research program.
Applicant must hold a PhD, DVM/DVSc, or equivalent degree.
Must have a faculty/staff appointment at an eligible university, accredited zoo, conservation organization, or equivalent non-profit institution.
Must have publication history as a Co-PI or Co-Investigator.
Applicants currently in residency programs are not eligible.
Must not have previously received >US$25,000 as PI on a single independent extramural award.
Mentor support required (if invited to full proposal).

Applies to Both Awards

Only one application per Principal Investigator.
International projects must include a named in-country collaborator or mentor.
Active Morris Animal Foundation grantees must be current on reporting requirements.

Summary

The mission of Morris Animal Foundation is to bridge science and resources to advance the health of animals. To achieve this mission, we fund hypothesis-driven, humane research projects with high scientific merit and the potential for significant impact. We are a nonprofit organization funded by public support from individuals, corporations, clubs, foundations, and earnings from our endowed funds. Our donors are interested in funding research that results in impactful animal health achievements and benefits both scientific and non-scientific stakeholders including veterinarians, companion animal owners and communities.

Overhead

Up to 8% of the budget's total direct costs can be applied to indirect costs if your institution charges for these costs. The addition of indirect costs should not result in the total exceeding the maximum allowable budget.

NOTE: Consult your Faculty Associate Dean (Research) (ADR) regarding Faculty-specific deadlines and submission processes.

Principal Investigators: Complete a Research Management System (RMS) record, including a copy of your complete application, and submit this for approvals in RMS.

Postdocs, students, and trainees: For fellowships and externally-sponsored research training awards or opportunities, you must complete the Research Funding Application Approval (RFAA) Trainee PDF form, and submit it, along with a complete copy of the application, to Research Services at rsotrainee@ucalgary.ca. Trainees should not use RMS at this time.

Approvals: The University of Calgary requires that all funding applications be approved prior to submission. Approval requires signatures via either RMS or the RFAA Trainee form, in the following order:

• Principal Investigator
• Department Head
• Faculty ADR/Dean
• Research Services (on behalf of the Vice-President Research)

Read the Meaning of Grant Signatures policy to understand what your approval means. Please see the agency guidelines for details about which signatures are required on your application, as it may differ from internal requirements.

Late submissions: Late submissions will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances. If you submit your RMS record to Research Services after the internal deadline has passed, you must secure additional approvals. Please read: Late Applications Process.
