Give a Breath Research Award

Eligibility

The Give A Breath Research Award is open to researchers as defined by an individual who is autonomous regarding their research activities, and has an academic or research appointment at a Canadian institution.

New researchers/investigators involved in pilot, basic science, and/or proof of concept projects, are strongly encouraged to apply.

** Please note that these research funding opportunities are intended to support projects with demonstrated financial need. Funding will be allocated based on the level of need demonstrated by applicants, as determined by the adjudication committee. We prioritize equitable distribution of resources and encourage applicants to be transparent in their submissions regarding their financial need.

Summary

The Give a Breath Research Award is designed to address critical gaps in the understanding and treatment of advanced lung cancer, specifically focusing on post-first-line therapy options. Funded through the incredible support of the Give a Breath 5K, Canada¿s premier fundraising event for lung cancer awareness, this award reflects a commitment to advancing research that has a direct and meaningful impact on patients and their families.

The overall goal of the Give A Breath Research Grant is to reduce the burden of lung cancer and optimize patient care. It is not intended to support awareness programs and is not intended to solely support research infrastructure. This is intended as a research grant and the funds may not be completely used to support a fellow.

The research focus of applications should revolve around advancements for patients with advanced or metastatic (i.e., stage III or IV) lung cancer; specifically, initiatives that apply to those beyond first-line therapy. Proposals with direct practical relevance to Canadians with lung cancer will be prioritized.

NOTE: Consult your Faculty Associate Dean (Research) (ADR) regarding Faculty-specific deadlines and submission processes.

Principal Investigators: Complete a Research Management System (RMS) record, including a copy of your complete application, and submit this for approvals in RMS.

Postdocs, students, and trainees: For fellowships and externally-sponsored research training awards or opportunities, you must complete the Research Funding Application Approval (RFAA) Trainee PDF form, and submit it, along with a complete copy of the application, to Research Services at rsotrainee@ucalgary.ca. Trainees should not use RMS at this time.

Approvals: The University of Calgary requires that all funding applications be approved prior to submission. Approval requires signatures via either RMS or the RFAA Trainee form, in the following order:

• Principal Investigator
• Department Head
• Faculty ADR/Dean
• Research Services (on behalf of the Vice-President Research)

Late submissions: Late submissions will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances. If you submit your RMS record to Research Services after the internal deadline has passed, you must secure additional approvals. Please read: Late Applications Process.
