Heart & Stroke Grant-in-Aid (GIA) Indigenous

Eligibility

In order to be eligible to apply for the GIA-I, Applicants must meet both the standard GIA criteria and the following GIA-I criteria: 

• Principal Applicant (PA) and (if applicable) Co-Principal Applicant (Co-PA) must either self identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit and/or Métis) or provide evidence of having meaningful and culturally safe engagement with Indigenous Peoples, or both, and have a full-time academic or faculty appointment (i.e., at minimum, at the Assistant or Clinical Assistant Professor level) at an eligible Canadian institution at the time the application is submitted. 
• An Indigenous Lead (IL) who is an Indigenous Elder and/or an Indigenous Knowledge Holder must be involved and identified on the application if the PA or Co-PA do not meet the requirements of an IL. An IL is considered an equal partner to the PA on the application. 
• The application must align with the purpose and objective of the GIA-I

Applicants must complete a registration for the funding opportunity using the Heart & Stroke's electronic grant and award management system CIRCUlink before accessing and submitting the application. 

Note that registration for the competition closes three (3) hours prior to the submission deadline. Heart & Stroke strongly encourage Applicants to begin the registration process as early as possible, and well in advance of the application submission deadline to ensure timely completion.

Summary

As part of the Grant-in-Aid (GIA) research program, the Indigenous Research Stream (GIA-I) supports Indigenous-led (First Nations, Inuit, and/or Métis) heart and/or brain health research that is grounded in Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Doing to advance and generate Indigenous knowledges, data and approaches. 

This Stream responds to longstanding barriers in health research funding systems by creating space for research priorities, methodologies, timelines, measures of success, and knowledge mobilization approaches that are defined with and by First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples. The GIA-I aims to provide dedicated funding for Indigenous-led heart and brain health research that emphasizes Indigenous self determination, Indigenous data sovereignty, community governance, relational accountability, and Indigenous knowledge systems.

The GIA-I offers support for projects in cardiovascular or cerebrovascular research that are Indigenous-led and culturally grounded, community-driven, and committed to upholding the sovereignty and wisdom of Indigenous Peoples throughout the research process. This support may be provided to successful GIA-I Applicants (¿Applicants¿) for a maximum of four (4) years. GIA-I funds may only be used to support research conducted in Canada.

NOTE: Consult your Faculty Associate Dean (Research) (ADR) regarding Faculty-specific deadlines and submission processes.

Principal Investigators: Complete a Research Management System (RMS) record, including a copy of your complete application, and submit this for approvals in RMS.

Postdocs, students, and trainees: For fellowships and externally-sponsored research training awards or opportunities, you must complete the Research Funding Application Approval (RFAA) Trainee PDF form, and submit it, along with a complete copy of the application, to Research Services at rsotrainee@ucalgary.ca. Trainees should not use RMS at this time.

Approvals: The University of Calgary requires that all funding applications be approved prior to submission. Approval requires signatures via either RMS or the RFAA Trainee form, in the following order:

• Principal Investigator
• Department Head
• Faculty ADR/Dean
• Research Services (on behalf of the Vice-President Research)

Late submissions: Late submissions will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances.
