Lung Cancer Research Grants

Eligibility

Principal investigator and co-applicants must hold a research position at a Canadian institution and be able to hold research funds at their institution. Collaborators may be affiliated with institutions outside of Canada however, cross-Canada collaborations are preferred.

The research team must include only one (1) Principal Investigator.; The number of co-applicants is limited three (3) while the number of collaborators is not restricted. Research teams may include other members such as graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, research or coordination associates, research technicians, and research assistants. Teams are strongly encouraged to include Early Career Investigators.

To ensure that the research is relevant for individuals affected by lung cancer, including patients, families and caregivers, all applicants must include an engagement plan describing how people with lived experience (PWLE) will be actively involved throughout the project (e.g. study design, analysis, dissemination). At least one PWLE must be included as a member of the research teamfrom planning through to completion. Applicants should clearly outline how their contributions willinform key stages of the research process.

Summary

Lung CancerTranslational Research Grant Competition, aimed at accelerating research that improves andexpands detection and treatment options for patients diagnosed with this disease. Through this program, CRS will award up to four (4) grants of $500,000 each.

This Competition will fund up to four (4) translational research projects focused on improving early detection or treatment of lung cancer.

Proposals must be directly relevant to lung cancer early detection or treatment, including but notlimited to:

• Identification of predictive biomarkers of early stages of lung cancer, disease progression, or treatment response;
• Identification of novel treatments for lung cancer;
• Identification of mechanisms of treatment resistance;
• Comprehensive correlative studies on diverse biospecimens (e.g., tissue, liquid biopsies).These could include:
  • Longitudinal biospecimens collected as part of an imminent* (predicted to be open forrecruitment <6 months into the funding period), ongoing or recently completed early phaseclinical trial.
    • *For trials that have not yet opened, investigators must provide a Letter of Support fromthe study sponsor confirming commitment to provide study drug;
  • Biospecimens collected through real-world clinical trial with prospective clinical/treatmentdata collection;
  • Biospecimens from richly annotated cohorts.

Principal Investigators: Complete a Research Management System (RMS) record, including a copy of your complete application, and submit this for approvals in RMS.

Postdocs, students, and trainees: For fellowships and externally-sponsored research training awards or opportunities, you must complete the Research Funding Application Approval (RFAA) Trainee PDF form, and submit it, along with a complete copy of the application, to Research Services at rsotrainee@ucalgary.ca. Trainees should not use RMS at this time.

Approvals: The University of Calgary requires that all funding applications be approved prior to submission. Approval requires signatures via either RMS or the RFAA Trainee form, in the following order:

• Principal Investigator
• Department Head
• Faculty ADR/Dean
• Research Services (on behalf of the Vice-President Research)

Late submissions: Late submissions will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances. If you submit your RMS record to Research Services after the internal deadline has passed, you must secure additional approvals. Please read: Late Applications Process.
