Eligibility
- Each proposal must include at least three eligible co-PIs from at least three different T-AP participating countries, with representation from both sides of the Atlantic.
- Researchers may participate in only one proposal as a Lead PI or co-PI.
- Applications must comply with all relevant eligibility requirements. If any research partner within a consortium is found to be ineligible, the entire consortium will be deemed ineligible.
- The funding organizations’ specific Addenda — which set out national eligibility rules and requirements — are available on the call website. All research teams are strongly encouraged to contact their respective funding organizations at least six weeks before the application deadline to confirm the eligibility of the national teams involved.

Summary
The Trans-Atlantic Platform (T-AP) seeks to foster innovative and interdisciplinary transnational research that actively anticipates future developments, contributes to new knowledge and tools to help society respond to emerging challenges, and supports a resilient and inclusive future for all. The Preparing for Tomorrow: Societies and Strategies in Times of Transition call will fund collaborative research that advances conceptual, empirical, and normative understanding of how societies envision, prepare for, and respond to uncertain futures. The Preparing for Tomorrow call seeks to generate knowledge that supports resilient, inclusive, and forward-looking strategies and that informs policy and practice at local, national, and international levels. The call supports social sciences, humanities and/or interdisciplinary research focused on the themes described below.
Proposals are invited from transnational research teams to address one or more of the following overarching themes:
- Uncertainty: sources, costs, communication, and improvement
- The many faces of the future and crisis: historical, cultural, and regional perspectives
- Scope and coordination of response strategies
- Normative inquiry into prevention and preparation for future crises
Note: To be eligible for SSHRC funding, the proposal must comply with SSHRC's subject matter eligibility.
Refer to the Preparing For Tomorrow program page for full guidelines, eligibility criteria, and application instructions.

Submission Process
This is a two-stage process consisting of Letter of Intent (LOI) and full application. Both stages will be part of the Research Management System (RMS), and approvals will be obtained electronically.
Project teams are composed of a Lead Principal Investigator (Lead PI), co-principal investigators (coPIs), and collaborators. Nominate one of the Co-PIs as the Lead PI. The Lead PI submits both the Letter of Intent to Apply (LOI) and the full application using the German Research Foundation (DFG) elan Portal on behalf of the consortium.
Letter of Intent (LOI)
Step 1: RMS Record
- NOIs must be submitted to Research Services (RSO) for institutional approval and mandatory administrative review through the Research Management System (RMS) by July 3, 2026 at 12:00 p.m.
- Complete a Pre-Award/Letters of Intent record in RMS and “Submit for academic approvals” (Under Save & Progress) in good time to allow for approvals from your Department Head and/or ADR prior to the RSO internal deadline.
- Final institutional approval should be provided in RMS prior to submission to DFG.
Full Application
In addition to the required documents for the larger T-AP proposal (the main application) submitted to DFG, the Principal Investigator in Canada must submit budget and administrative documents to SSHRC via the Convergence Portal on or before the deadline of October 28, 2026.
As an optional service, Research Services (RSO) offers detailed application reviews. If you would like a detailed review, the RSO must receive the RMS record (faculty-level approvals complete) and application submission in the Convergence Portal by October 9, 2026 at 4:00 p.m.
Step 2A: SSHRC Supplementary Information
- Complete the Trans-Atlantic Platform Preparing for Tomorrow supplementary application in the Convergence Portal.
- Once the supplementary application is complete (including all participant info), go to the “Finalize Application” section and follow the prompts to submit your application. Your application will be sent to Research Services (RSO), and the status will change to Received by Administrator. Please ensure your application is final and complete. The RSO will not review drafts, and, once received, your application may be submitted to NFRF without further notice. The final internal deadline for submission is October 21, 2026 at 12:00 p.m.
Step 2B: RMS Record
- Applications must be submitted to Research Services (RSO) for institutional approval and mandatory administrative review through the Research Management System (RMS) by October 21, 2026 at 12:00 p.m.
- There is no need to create an entirely new Pre-Award/Application record in RMS. Continue with the same RMS number by updating the status of the Pre-Award/Letter of Intent record from Step 1B to 'Invited for full application' (under Save & Progress). The system will generate a Pre-Award/Application record.
- Complete the Pre-Award/Application record in RMS and “Submit for academic approvals” (Under Save & Progress) in good time to allow for approvals from your Department Head and/or ADR prior to the RSO internal deadline.
- Upon review and approval, the RSO will submit the supplementary application to SSHRC.
NOTE:
- Your application will not be considered submitted and will not be reviewed until both the application is submitted in Convergence (a paper copy is not required) and the RMS Approvals have been received.
- The final deadline of 12:00 p.m. on October 21 is a hard deadline. The three-day deadline ensures that Research Services is able to complete a basic review of the application and secure institutional signature in a timely fashion.

Approvals
NOTE: Consult your Faculty Associate Dean (Research) (ADR) regarding Faculty-specific deadlines and submission processes.
Principal Investigators: Complete a Research Management System (RMS) record, including a copy of your complete application, and submit this for approvals in RMS.
Postdocs, students, and trainees: For fellowships and externally-sponsored research training awards or opportunities, you must complete the Research Funding Application Approval (RFAA) Trainee PDF form, and submit it, along with a complete copy of the application, to Research Services at rsotrainee@ucalgary.ca. Trainees should not use RMS at this time.
Approvals: The University of Calgary requires that all funding applications be approved prior to submission. Approval requires signatures via either RMS or the RFAA Trainee form, in the following order:
- Principal Investigator
- Department Head
- Faculty ADR/Dean
- Research Services (on behalf of the Vice-President Research)
Read the Meaning of Grant Signatures policy to understand what your approval means. Please see the agency guidelines for details about which signatures are required on your application, as it may differ from internal requirements.
Late submissions: Late submissions will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances. If you submit your RMS record to Research Services after the internal deadline has passed, you must secure additional approvals. Please read: Late Applications Process.
