Body composition and bone growth study

Summary

This study will compare bone health and bone growth between children and teens with and without obesity.

The goals of this study are:
- To see if body composition affects bone growth, density and strength in children and teens
- To see if these effects change as children and teenagers grow
- The study team also want to know if the way children and teens stand changes the relationship between body composition and bone (growth, strength and density).

This study will involve bone imaging scans and questionnaires.

Eligibility

Currently recruiting participants: Yes

Eligible ages: 9 to 13

Accepts healthy participants: Yes

Inclusion criteria:

To be eligible to be in the study, all participants must be:
1) Aged 9-13 years (inclusive)
2) Be willing and able to consent to the study
3) Controls need to be within the healthy weight range (between 5th and 85th percentile of BMI) for their age and sex

Eligibility can be confirmed over the phone at study screening

Exclusion criteria:

Children and teens are ineligible for this study if they:
1) Have any known bone disorders (eg. osteogenesis imperfecta)
2) Have any chronic conditions that are known to affect their bones (eg. diabetes, celiac disease, cystic fibrosis, juvenile idopathic arthritis, etc...)
3) Have a history of cancer
4) Chronically use steroid treatments. (Asthma medication does not count. It is okay to be in this study and use steroids for asthma)
5) Are pregnant or breastfeeding
6) If they have broken both wrists or broken both ankles
7) Weigh more than 330 lbs (150kg)
8) Are unable to lie still or sit still for 10 minutes
