Childfree by choice in male-dominated STEM workplaces
Summary
This study explores the workplace experiences of childfree by choice individuals working in male-dominated STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics/Medicine). Within medicine, we are focusing on sub-specialties that are male-dominated, such as surgery and cardiology. For this study, "childfree by choice" means you have voluntarily chosen not to have children (biological, adopted, or step-children) and intend to remain childfree. This does not include people who are childless due to infertility, medical reasons, or circumstances outside their control. We want to learn about any bias or discrimination people may have faced because they chose not to have children, and what changes they think would help. We are especially interested in hearing from women and femme-presenting individuals, though people of other genders are also welcome to participate for comparison.
Eligibility
Eligible ages: 18 to 120
Accepts healthy participants: Yes
Inclusion criteria:
1. You identify as childfree by choice (as defined above)
2. You currently work, or have previously worked, in a male-dominated STEM field (a field or discipline where about 75% or more of professionals are men, such as engineering, physics, computer science, or surgery)
3. You are 18 years of age or older
Exclusion criteria:
1. You have or had children (biological, adopted, or step-children)
2. You do not have children but would like to have them in the future, or are unable to have children due to infertility, medical reasons, or circumstances outside your control
3. You have never worked in a male-dominated STEM field or medical sub-specialty
4. You are under 18 years of age
