Learning to Question AI: Secondary Social Studies Teachers’ Perspectives on Critical Engagement with AI-Generated History
Summary
This study looks at how secondary Social Studies teachers think students should use and question information created by artificial intelligence when learning about history.
The purpose of the study is to better understand what skills and learning strategies students may need to judge whether AI-generated historical information is accurate, trustworthy, balanced, and complete. The study will also explore how teachers think students should consider bias, different perspectives, missing voices, and the credibility of sources when using AI.
Teachers who take part will be invited to a one-hour interview. During the interview, they will be asked about their experiences teaching Social Studies, how they see students using AI, and what they think students need to learn in order to use AI thoughtfully and critically. Participants will also be shown a short example of AI-generated historical information and asked how they would want students to respond to it.
The study is not designed to evaluate teachers or their teaching. The goal is to learn from teachers’ experiences and perspectives and to identify ideas that may help support Social Studies teaching and student learning as AI becomes more common in schools.
