Low Oxygens Effect on The Bodies Oxygen Carrying Capacity

Summary

This study looks at how people respond to repeated 1 hour low oxygen environments. In addition, the amount of iron in the body affects the response changes. Participants will visit the lab several times to complete exercise tests, breathe air with lower oxygen levels for short periods, and give small blood samples so we can measure hormone, iron levels and changes in red blood cells. The goal is to better understand how the body adapt to low-oxygen conditions and what irons influence is. This may help help future research on exercise training, high-altitude exposure, and health conditions related to low oxygen. Participants will be split into low and optimal iron levels: the low iron levels will only have 3 visits over 3 weeks and the optimal iron will have 17 visits over 6 weeks.

Eligible ages: 18 to 40

Accepts healthy participants: Yes

Inclusion criteria:

We are seeking healthy, recreationally active males and females between the age of 18-40.

Exclusion criteria:

- Obese
- Blood disorders
- Cardiorespiratory disease
- Lung disease
- Diabetes
- Females: Pregnant or nursing
- History of high altitude pulmonary edema
- Not exposed to altitude >2500m or air travel >4 hours within the past week
- Currently a smoker (including vaping)
- Currently undergoing hormone replacement therapy
