Understanding Treatment Adherence in Eosinophilic Esophagitis in Canada
Summary
Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) causes inflammation in the body (the esophagus). Most people with EoE need treatment for many years, often for life. Chronic diseases can cause complications—and EoE is no exception. There are several treatment options (diet, prescription drugs) available in EoE. But patients find it hard to take these over time.
One reason is they can feel frustrated to take something for a long time. Taking medications at the right time can be difficult. It can be a struggle to take medications for a long time. Diet treatments are hard to keep doing for years. Side effects of drugs, and frequent check up with doctors are also concerns. EoE is becoming more common. It is a growing burden on the healthcare system. So its important we understand the concerns patients have with treatments.
In Canada, how patients take their meds and follow doctor suggestions for EoE is not known. When treatment is not taken, inflammation causes problems with swallowing. We know when inflammation is present, food can get stuck in the esophagus. We know quality of life can suffer when treatment is not taken. So it is important for doctors to know what concerns patients have with their treatment.
We want to understand adult patients’ experiences with taking treatment in EoE treatment. Survey will take approximately 20min to complete. At the start of the study and then six months later. This will help us know if patients’ experiences change with time and routine medical care. To participate we will request your permission to access your medical records to verify the state of your medical condition.
