The Usability of Drug Error Reduction Software (DERS) in Smart Infusion Pumps: Exploring Programming Constraints on Nurse Workarounds and Patient Safety

Summary

This study looks at how nurses use smart infusion pumps to give medications. Smart infusion pumps are devices that send medicine into a vein. They also have safety measures, called Drug Error Reduction Software (DERS), that helps prevent dosing mistakes.
The goal of this study is to see how easy or hard these pumps are to use. We want to understand the problems nurses may have when setting up the pump and how they react to safety alerts.
The study includes two practice tasks where nurses program the Baxter Sigma Spectrum pump, and an interview about their experiences. No real patients are involved.
By learning from nurses, we hope to find ways to make these pumps easier to use and improve patient safety.
