WLI Adult ES

Summary

Whole lung Irradiation (WLI) has been proposed since 1970s to treat lung metastasis in newly diagnosed patients with Ewing Sarcoma. It improves event free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) in pediatric patients with Metastatic Ewing Sarcoma (mES) limited to lung metastasis, and endorsed by guidelines worldwide. However, it remains unclear that adults with lung metastasis would derive similar benefit as data is scarce. Although both prospective and retrospective studies demonstrated promising results for WLI in adult populations, numbers of adults patients included in those studies are small and could substantially be impacted by selection bias. Therefore, there is no consensus on using WLI in adult population.
In a survey of 38 sarcoma experts, around two-thirds of participants support whole lung irradiation for metastatic Ewing sarcoma in adults up to 45, and half for age 60. Pediatric oncologists favoured WLI more than adult oncologists. In children with mES, several cooperative groups and consensus guidelines recommend WLI in all cases of pulmonary metastatic diseases.
We plan to conduct a national collaborative study to investigate the pattern of practice in terms of WLI for adults with mES limited to lung metastasis and clinical outcomes across Canada.

Inclusion criteria:

Any patient who were/are diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma.

Exclusion criteria:

any patient who were/are do not have Ewing Sarcoma
