Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP)

All postdoctoral scholars whose initial appointment is for 12 months or longer will be eligible to receive the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP). The AHCIP provides Alberta residents with coverage for hospital and physician services. Visit the AHCIP website for information on how to register and to see what hospital and physician services are provided.  

 

Lifeworks Employee and Family Assistance Program

Lifeworks Employee and Family Assistance Plan is a confidential service available to all postdoctoral scholar categories, employees and their dependents at no cost, to help manage work and personal life. LifeWorks provides a variety of services, including counselling, financial and legal consultation, childcare and eldercare locator tools, and much more.

Maternity and Parental Leave

Postdoctoral Associates may be eligible for Employment Insurance (EI) maternity and parental benefits. For more information please refer to the collective agreement Articles 10.15-10.31. 

EI benefits are not provided to you automatically. You must apply to Service Canada as soon as you stop working. In your application you must include the Record of Employment (ROE) issued by the University of Calgary as your employer. Postdoctoral Associates may also be eligible for a maternity/parental leave top up payment through the University.  Please refer to the collective agreement Articles 10.24-10.31 for more details.

Unpaid leave

Postdoctoral Fellowship Holders may be eligible to receive maternity/parental leave. Postdoctoral Fellowship Holders planning to take maternity/parental leave should review their funding agency’s guidelines or contact their funding agency directly.

Unpaid Leave

Postdoctoral Fellowship Holders are advised to contact their funding agencies for approval of unpaid leave.

Prior to going on leave, the Time off Request Form must be submitted to the Postdoc Office at postdoc@ucalgary.ca. Any questions regarding paid and unpaid leaves can be directed to the Postdoc Office.
