Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP)

All postdoctoral scholars whose initial appointment is for 12 months or longer will be eligible to receive the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP). The AHCIP provides Alberta residents with coverage for hospital and physician services. Homewood Health Employee and Family Assistance Program

Homewood Health Employee and Family Assistance Plan (EFAP) is a confidential service available to all postdoctoral scholar categories, employees and their dependents at no cost, to help manage work and personal life. Homewood Health offers counselling, coaching, resources, information and support for all types of issues relating to mental health, health management and achieving greater personal and workplace wellbeing.

Alberta Blue Cross Plan C Extended Health and Dental Benefits

Postdoctoral Associates whose initial appointments are six months or longer will be automatically enrolled in Alberta Blue Cross Plan C extended health and dental benefits (single or family coverage). Maternity and Parental Leave

Postdoctoral Associates may be eligible for Employment Insurance (EI) maternity and parental benefits. In order to be eligible for EI benefits you must have accumulated at least 600 hours of insurable employment in the qualifying period.  EI benefits are not provided to you automatically. You must apply to Service Canada as soon as you stop working.

In your application you must include the Record of Employment (ROE) issued by the University of Calgary as your employer. Please submit an online employment verification request to hr@ucalgary.ca.

Bereavement Leave

Postdoctoral Associates may take a paid leave of up to five (5) business days following the death of an immediate family member.

 

Unpaid Leave

Postdocs receiving external funding may interrupt their awards to take unpaid leave for reasons of maternity, child rearing, illness, or family health-related responsibilities. Approval must be obtained from the funding agency and the University prior to the interruption of an award. Approval of a leave for a postdoc paid from their supervisor's grant is at the discretion of the supervisor and must be in compliance with the rules of the granting agency.

Prior to going on leave, the Time off Request Form must be submitted to the Postdoc Office at postdoc@ucalgary.ca. Any questions regarding paid and unpaid leaves can be directed to the Postdoc Office.

Postdoctoral Fellowship Holders may be eligible to receive maternity/parental leave. Postdoctoral Fellowship Holders planning to take maternity/parental leave should review their funding agency’s guidelines or contact their funding agency directly.
