Energy Research Strategy 2.0

Consultation and engagement with the UCalgary community

UCalgary is developing a new Energy Research Strategy

In 2013, UCalgary launched Energy Innovations for Today and Tomorrow, our institution’s first Energy Research Strategy. It was created by our scholars to foster a culture of interdisciplinary collaboration, addressing key energy and environmental grand challenges at the time. Energy Innovations for Today and Tomorrow enabled significant accomplishments and established UCalgary as an energy research leader nationally and internationally.

We are now looking to build on our success, and expand impactful research and training activities to promote further collaboration, through a new Energy Research Strategy (ERS2). ERS2 is a grassroots strategy built by you and your colleagues. We want to break down the typical silos that exist in the academy and empower transdisciplinary scholarship. ERS2 will drive systematic engagement with our scholars and students, the public, and external stakeholders, resulting in a diverse and inclusive framework that will guide energy research, training and innovation at UCalgary.

We are faced with new and urgent social, economic, energy, and environmental challenges, particularly with climate change. Climate change encompasses many energy challenges, and it touches on every aspect of society. The need to substantially and aggressively reduce emissions motivates a new era of energy research at UCalgary. It will take all of our knowledge and skills  to address these challenges.

  • Robert Skinner, Energy Research Advisor and Executive Fellow, School of Public Policy
  • Petra Dolata, Associate Professor, Department of History
  • Stephen Larter, Professor, Department of Geoscience and Associate Vice-President (Research-Innovation)
  • Rudiger Tscherning, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law
  • Steven Bryant, Professor, Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering and Canada Excellence Research Chair in Materials Engineering for Unconventional Oil Reservoirs
  • Yrjo Koskinen, Professor and Associate Dean of Research and Business Impact, Haskayne School of Business
  • Ian Gates, Professor, Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering and Director, Global Research Initiative in Sustainable Low Carbon Unconventional Resources

Summer 2020: The group of eight UCalgary scholars began compiling the draft Energy Research Strategy (ERS2)

Fall 2020: The draft ERS2 was shared with the Vice-President (Research)

December 2020: The draft ERS2 was shared with the Research and Scholarship Committee (RSC)

January 2021: The draft ERS2 was shared with the General Faculties Council (GFC)

February and March 2021: Broad internal consultation – we are seeking input from and engagement with UCalgary research, teaching, student, innovation and operational communities on ERS2

Spring/Summer 2021: Broad external consultation – we will seek input from our external stakeholders and partners on ERS2

Goals of broad campus consultation

  • Obtain your input on the strategy – we want to build ERS2 from the academy up

  • Ensure we are taking a transdisciplinary approach to energy research at UCalgary

  • Make sure we are being inclusive throughout our consultation process to build an inclusive ERS2

  • Learn about your thoughts and feedback for the new energy research strategy and to ensure that the strategy has relevance to you

  • To share our ideas collectively from the academy, students, and other operational units on campus
