One Child Every Child

A groundbreaking University of Calgary research initiative

In 2020, UNICEF ranked Canada 30th out of 38 wealthy countries in child health and wellness outcomes.

The One Child Every Child initiative seeks to change that.

In 2023, the University of Calgary received a $125-million grant from the Government of Canada, through the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF), for child health and wellness research, helping us launch the initiative.

In alignment with CFREF, OCEC prioritizes Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), integrates Indigenous perspectives, and utilizes comprehensive data and technology to create impactful evidence. The initiative focuses on three key themes — Better Beginnings, Precision Health and Wellness, and Vulnerable to Thriving — while leveraging cross-cutting accelerators to meet its objectives and maximize outcomes.

Through new and existing partnerships, this investment is strongly-positioned to leverage an additional $142 million from community organizations, and philanthropists (total: $268 million), demonstrating the importance and commitment of community organizations to this research enterprise.

One Child Every Child is anchored in a partnership of maternal and child health researchers, clinical leaders and research institutes at UCalgary, University of Alberta, University of Lethbridge, and Athabasca University.

Walking Parallel Paths

One Child Every Child is guided by ii’ taa’poh’to’p, the UCalgary Indigenous Strategy, and walks parallel paths with Indigenous Elders and scholars to encompass the wisdom, voices and priorities of Indigenous peoples for the betterment of all.

One Child Every Child brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, child health research institutes, education and healthcare providers, equity-deserving groups, local, national and global interest-holders to accelerate outcomes for children and their families.

The One Child Every Child Parallel Paths supports ongoing and new Indigenous scholars' research projects.
