Dr. Gregory Tyrrell received his BSc and MSc from the University of Alberta followed by a Ph.D. in Microbiology in 1992 from the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute at the University of Toronto. He then completed a two year Clinical Microbiology Fellowship program (1992 - 1994) at the same institution. He was then appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Dalhousie University in 1994 where he worked as a Clinical Microbiologist at the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Dr. Tyrrell was then recruited in 1997 to the Provincial Laboratory for Public Health as a Clinical Microbiologist and Associate Director of the National Centre for Streptococcus. Since that time he has held an academic appointment in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology (LMP) at University of Alberta. Dr. Tyrrell has been a Professor in LMP 2009, with a cross-appointment to the Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology. In addition to his appointments at the University of Alberta, Dr. Tyrrell holds positions within Alberta Health Services as the Zone Clinical Department Section Chief, Medical Microbiology, Northern Alberta and Clinical Microbiologist, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, University of Alberta Hospital and Provincial Laboratory for Public Health. His research programs are focused on Group A and B streptococci as well as Mycobacterium tuberculosis epidemiology.
