Canadian Antimicrobial Resistance Network: CAN-AMR-Net

The Canadian Antimicrobial Resistance Network (CAN-AMR-Net) is a Health Research Training Platform (HRTP) funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) from 2024 to 2030. With a central platform management team based at the University of Calgary, five hubs across Canada (BC, Prairies, ON, QC and Atlantic Canada), and four thematic areas, this Pan-Canadian, One Health initiative brings together academic experts, researchers, trainees and interest holders from both public and private sectors. Encompassing over 25 institutions, CAN-AMR-Net focuses on addressing Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) from a One Health approach and leverages diverse expertise to train the next generation of researchers, practitioners, and leaders in AMR and One Health to tackle the wicked problem of AMR.

Trainee Scholarships

The CAN-AMR-Net Trainee Scholarship supports outstanding graduate students and postdoctoral fellows (PDFs) who engage in AMR research across diverse disciplines. This scholarship provides financial assistance for academic excellence, transdisciplinary research, and commitment to AMR research across human, animal, and environmental health sectors.  

Scholarship value: As per the CAN-AMR-Net funding, the award will provide a one-year award valued at:  

  • $10,000 for graduate students and  
  • $20,000 for PDFs.

Application Deadlines: Applications should be submitted by January 31, 2025.

Application Process: Completed application form (click here) along with your resume/ CV and a copy of your transcripts. 

Decision and Notification: Decisions will be communicated within 8 weeks of the application deadline. Recipients must confirm acceptance within 14 days of notification. This award is available to start as of May 1 or September 1. Funds committed to graduate students or PDFs who subsequently withdraw or graduate during the year must be cancelled immediately, and remaining funds revert to CAN-AMR-Net. 

Post-Award Requirements:

  • Present your research at CAN-AMR-Net’s annual or regional hub meetings.
  • CAN-AMR-Net acknowledgment. See the template.

Trainee Travel Awards

The CAN-AMR-Net travel award provides financial assistance to cover expenses to outstanding trainees (graduate students and postdoctoral fellows) who engage in AMR research across diverse disciplines, to attend and present their work at CAN-AMR-Net’s annual conference, as well as at other affiliated educational events and workshops. 

Travel award value: Up to $1,500 per trip annually, subject to available funding

Application Deadlines:

  • Applications for Spring/Summer meetings/ conferences are due February 15. 
  • Applications for Fall/Winter meetings/ conferences are due July 31.

Post-Award Requirements:

  • Acknowledgment in Publications: Award recipients must acknowledge CAN-AMR-Net funding by including the CAN-AMR-Net logo in their conference presentations (will be provided to the recipient).
  • Expense Documentation for Travel Awards: Award recipients must submit original receipts, including boarding passes (if applicable), along with a completed expense claim within 30 days of travel.

Faculties, Independent Researchers and Knowledge Users

Membership is open to all faculties, independent researchers and knowledge users based at Canadian institutions or organizations. 

International researchers or professionals may also be eligible and will be considered if they are collaborating with a CAN-AMR-Net member or contributing significantly to AMR-related initiatives within the network.
