Danielle Julien

DVM, MPH, and PhD


Position: Research Associate - One Health at UCalgary

Danielle was born in Grenada, West Indies and lived in St. Kitts and Barbados before moving to Guelph, Ontario, Canada. In 2004, she started the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC). During this time, Danielle had the unique opportunity to travel to and volunteer in Kenya, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe as part of the Global Vets program facilitated by Veterinarians Without Borders. During this experience, Danielle recognized the importance of sustainable community health and the utility of combining veterinary medicine with One Health in the control and prevention of zoonoses. She completed her veterinary student externship in the New Forest, Hampshire, UK and in 2008 graduated from the DVM program. After one year in companion animal practice, Danielle worked on a contract project with Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Rural Affairs and the Poultry Industry Council. In 2011 she left industry to pursue a Master of Public Health and further, PhD in Epidemiology with Drs. Jan Sargeant and Sherilee Harper in the Department of Population Medicine. Danielle is passionate about conducting epidemiological research that considers One Health to control and prevent companion animal zoonoses, prioritizing sustainable community health and well-being, and using empirical research findings and innovative knowledge translation techniques to effectively communicate and connect with a wide variety of audiences. Danielle has worked as a Research Associate in the One Health at UCalgary Office since moving to the city with her family in September of 2019. Danielle is also the Sessional Instructor for Introduction to One Health (ONEH*1000) at the University of Guelph.
