The Killam Trust awards are the university’s most prestigious internal recognition of research excellence, celebrating scholars whose paradigm-shifting work is shaping Canada’s future. Made possible by the enduring vision of the Killam Trusts, these awards honour researchers whose discoveries expand knowledge and define the world to come.
The Killam Trusts support advanced education and research at the University of Calgary, four other Canadian Universities and through the National Killam Programs, administered by the National Research Council (NRC). The Killam Trusts were established in memory of Izaak Walton Killam, were created by his wife, Dorothy Johnston Killam through the combination of a bequest in her will and donations made throughout her life.

Killam Research and Teaching Awards
Five Killam Research and Teaching Awards honour outstanding teaching, supervision, and research at the University of Calgary.
Please refer to the terms of reference for each award for eligibility requirements.
McCaig-Killam Teaching Award: is given to an individual for outstanding contributions to teaching and learning at the University.
Killam Undergraduate Mentorship Award: recognizes excellence in mentorship at the undergraduate level.
Killam Graduate Supervision and Mentorship Award: recognizes academic staff for their excellence in supervision of graduate students.
Killam Emerging Research Leader Award and Grant: is presented to up to three individuals who have, within 10 years of beginning their first independent academic appointment, made outstanding contributions to research in an area of research recognized by CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.
Killam Research Excellence Award: is presented to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to research. Each year the award rotates between Tri-Agency research areas. Refer to the awards terms of reference for more details.

Killam Annual Professors
The Killam Annual Professors are awarded annually to outstanding nationally and/or internationally recognized professors at the University of Calgary.
Up to five Killam Annual Professors will be awarded annually. Award recipients receive a $10,000 cash prize. Cash prize is paid via payroll and is subject to standard deductions.

Killam Memorial Chairs
The Killam Memorial Chairs are the University of Calgary’s highest research positions, created through an endowment by Dorothy Killam to attract, recognize, and support the most distinguished scholars.

Killam Visiting Scholar
The Killam Visiting Scholar Award provides sponsorship of a distinguished scholar who will make significant contributions to academic life at the University of Calgary.
