Kinematic Insole Usability Project

Summary

This study looks at how well special shoe inserts with built-in movement sensors can measure walking and other everyday movements in children with trouble walking.

We want to find out if these sensors can measure movement as accurately as the equipment used in a gait lab. We also want to learn how comfortable and easy the sensors are to use during a normal day at home and in the community.

If you choose to take part, you will come to Alberta Children's Hospital for one study visit. During the visit, the sensors will be placed inside your shoes while you complete several walking trials. We will also use cameras and other equipment to measure your movement so we can compare the results.

Some participants will also be asked to wear the sensors for one day (about 8 hours) during their usual daily activities. Afterward, we will ask you and your parent or caregiver about your experience using the sensors, including how comfortable they were and how easy they were to use.

What we learn from this study may help researchers and health care providers better measure how children with mobility challenges move in their everyday lives. This could lead to better ways to monitor progress and improve future care.

Currently recruiting participants: Yes

Eligible ages: 1 to 99

Inclusion criteria:

1. Diagnosed with a neurological condition causing mobility impairments.
2. Foot size that can accommodate wearable kinematic sensors (Roughly Children's size 1-13)
