Eligibility
- holds a PhD, MD, or other regulated health professional degree
- pursing a full-time research fellowship at a Canadian university or research institute
- must be pursuing fellowship full-time unless part-time work is a disability-related accommodation or necessary for another reason
- MDs and health professionals must have at least 50% dedicated research time during core working hours
- research in the area(s) of gastroenterology and/or hepatology
- no more than three years of full-time postdoctoral experience as of the date the award starts
- Career interruptions are not counted toward years of postdoctoral experience. Applicants should provide context for their career interruptions in the TRIANGLE Personal Statement. Interruptions could include, but are not limited to:
- maternity, parental, and/or adoption leave
- illness and/or disability
- pandemic-related delays
- mandatory military service
- war, civil conflicts, and/or natural disasters
- socio-economic factors
- lack of research opportunities
- child and/or elder-care responsibilities
- Career interruptions are not counted toward years of postdoctoral experience. Applicants should provide context for their career interruptions in the TRIANGLE Personal Statement. Interruptions could include, but are not limited to:
- citizen of any country

Summary
TRIANGLE Canada is a CIHR-funded Health Research Training Platform that supports researchers and clinician-researchers working in GI and liver at a Canadian university or research institute, with the goal of transforming the research training experience, the Canadian research landscape, and patient care.
For Research Fellows, there are two streams of awards:
ENRICH—for applicants with a major national or provincial award
ENRICH awards recognize the excellence of research fellows who will have funding from a major national and/or provincial source during the term of their TRIANGLE award. AMPLIFY awards further enrich their training with tailored education, mentorship, community, and experiential learning opportunities.
At the end of each three-year TRIANGLE award, awardees will have the self-knowledge, skills, experience, and network to launch a fulfilling and impactful career in any sector that leverages their specialist knowledge and skills.
TRIANGLE awardees are provided with three years of intensive support and innovative learning opportunities, including:
- skill and knowledge building via TRIANGLE curriculum
- mentorship from leaders in research, industry, government, and non-profit
- experiential learning placements in industry, government, non-profit, scientific journals, research labs
- guided career exploration and planning from leaders in graduate professional and career development
- community and network building with the GI and liver communities
- support for mental, physical, and emotional well-being
- Financial support
- travel and expenses for TRIANGLE annual meeting
- travel and expenses for in-person mentorship and/or training activities
- competitive support for experiential learning placements (industry internships and/or lab visits)
- Non-financial support
- skill and knowledge building via TRIANGLE curriculum
- mentorship from leaders in research, industry, government, and non-profit
- experiential learning placements in industry, government, non-profit, scientific journals, research labs
- guided career exploration and planning from leaders in graduate professional and career development
- community and network building with the GI and liver communities
- support for mental, physical, and emotional well-being

- Awardees must begin funding within one year of award offer
TRIANGLE awards up to six ENRICH fellowships awards per year, split with ENRICH PhD awards on the basis of merit. Awards are limited to one per laboratory/research group per competition.
AMPLIFY—for applicants without a major national or provincial award
AMPLIFY fellowships provide salary support in addition to tailored education, mentorship, community, and experiential learning opportunities. AMPLIFY awards are funded in partnership with CIHR, the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology, Crohn’s and Colitis Canada, the Canadian Association for the Study of the Liver, CIDSCann, and the Farncombe Institute at McMaster University.
At the end of each three-year TRIANGLE award, awardees will have the self-knowledge, skills, experience, and network to launch a fulfilling and impactful career in any sector that leverages their specialist knowledge and skills.
TRIANGLE AMPLIFY awardees are also provided with three years of intensive support and innovative learning opportunities, including:
- skill and knowledge building via TRIANGLE curriculum
- mentorship from leaders in research, industry, government, and non-profit
- experiential learning placements in industry, government, non-profit, scientific journals, research labs
- guided career exploration and planning from leaders in graduate professional and career development
- community and network building with the GI and liver communities
- support for mental, physical, and emotional well-being
- Financial support
- For PhDs and non-practicing MDs and health professionals
- Salary support: $25,000 per year + benefits
- $25,000 per year in salary support from TRIANGLE + 19% benefits ($4,750)
- Career and professional development support:
- travel and expenses for TRIANGLE annual meeting
- travel and expenses for in-person mentorship and/or training activities
- support for up to two experiential learning placements (industry internships and/or lab visits)
- Salary support: $25,000 per year + benefits
- For practicing MDs and health professionals
- Salary support: $35,000 per year + benefits
- $35,000 in salary support from TRIANGLE + 19% benefits ($6,650)
- Career and professional development support:
- travel and expenses for TRIANGLE annual meeting
- travel and expenses for in-person mentorship and/or training activities
- support for up to two experiential learning placements (industry internships and/or lab visits)
- Salary support: $35,000 per year + benefits
- For PhDs and non-practicing MDs and health professionals
- Non-financial support
- skill and knowledge building via TRIANGLE curriculum
- mentorship from leaders in research, industry, government, and non-profit

Approvals
NOTE: Consult your Faculty Associate Dean (Research) (ADR) regarding Faculty-specific deadlines and submission processes.
Principal Investigators: Complete a Research Management System (RMS) record, including a copy of your complete application, and submit this for approvals in RMS.
Postdocs, students, and trainees: For fellowships and externally-sponsored research training awards or opportunities, you must complete the Research Funding Application Approval (RFAA) Trainee PDF form, and submit it, along with a complete copy of the application, to Research Services at rsotrainee@ucalgary.ca. Trainees should not use RMS at this time.
Approvals: The University of Calgary requires that all funding applications be approved prior to submission. Approval requires signatures via either RMS or the RFAA Trainee form, in the following order:
- Principal Investigator
- Department Head
- Faculty ADR/Dean
- Research Services (on behalf of the Vice-President Research)

Late submissions: Late submissions will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances. If you submit your RMS record to Research Services after the internal deadline has passed, you must secure additional approvals. Please read: Late Applications Process.
