Undergraduate Summer Studentships

Undergraduate Research Summer Studentships provide up to $7,500 of financial support to University of Calgary undergraduates to conduct research for 8–, 12– or 16–weeks between May and August.

Supporting and mentoring an undergraduate student as part of the summer studentship program helps advance your research while providing valuable experience to students. 

Applications are open to students from all faculties and all years of study with specific opportunities for Black and Indigenous scholars.

Students can be considered for 19 different awards with one application, including:

Important Information for Supervisors

As an Alberta Innovates SRS or USRA supervisor, your responsibilities are:

  • To mentor and support the student, providing an opportunity for the student to learn and develop research skills.
  • Ensure the student can conduct their research experience in a safe and ethical environment, following procedures and rules of the University of Calgary, and if applicable those of the specific research environment in which the student is engaged.
  • Meet regularly with the student and provide regular feedback and support to the student and the student's research project.
  • Complete a final survey that adequately explains the student’s research successes and challenges.
  • If the applicant is granted this award, you will be required to ensure that it is used for the project described in the submitted application and abide by the University of Calgary’s policies governing the pursuit of research, including Academic Integrity. All research that involves the use of human subjects must be reviewed and certified as acceptable by the appropriate University Research Ethics Board.

Supervisors may support two (2) student submissions in AwardSpring (central application system). 

All supervisors supporting a student’s application to this competition agree to be entered into the pool of reviewers for this competition and to review summer studentship applications from students (other than their own).

Financial Commitments and Terms

USRA

Value: $7,500 total

  • USRAs have a value of $6,000, and UCalgary supervisors are required to supplement the award with a minimum top-up of $1,500.

Term:

  • UCalgary offers a 16-week USRA program where undergraduate students make a full-time commitment to their research for 16 consecutive weeks with a faculty member.

Alberta Innovates SRS

Studentships will be available for periods of 16 weeks, 12 weeks, or 8 weeks between May and August.

  • 16-week awards are in the amount of $7,500;
  • 12-week awards in the amount of $5,625; and
  • 8-week awards in the amount of $3,750.

Students must make a full-time commitment to their research during the period of the Alberta Innovates Summer Research Studentship.

The Application Process

  1. Find a student
    Students are encouraged to approach faculty members for research supervision. Supervisors are welcome to approach students with a research opportunity.
     
  2. Support your student's application
    Find out more about the format of the application and the rubric that will be used to evaluate each submission.
     
  3. Student submits their application
    Ensure your student submits their application by the deadline. Once they submit, you will receive an email to your UCalgary account with a link to submit your portion of the application.
     
  4. Submit your reference
    Ensure you submit your portion of the application by the deadline.
