SCN - Impact Awards: ELSI & HE Stream

Eligibility

Applicants MUST submit an LOI to be considered for the full application stage of the research competition. LOIs will be used to identify peer review requirements, gauge the level of interest in SCNs programs, and ensure projects fall within SCNs regenerative medicine mandate. 

Summary

SCN is pleased to invite proposals under the Impact Awards: ELSI & HE Stream Program. Funding through this program will support ELSI (Ethical, Legal and Social Implications) and Health Economics (HE) knowledge translation projects that focus on a social, economic, technological, regulatory, patient or ethical question or challenge that should be addressed to support knowledge advancement and/or uptake of regenerative medicine in Canada and beyond. Projects that include a focus on the translation of a technology out of the lab and through to health system adoption are of specific interest. Outputs can extend beyond traditional academic research products (e.g. journal publications or reports) and may include digital, educational or cultural materials. All outputs should be tailored for stakeholders or users. Successful projects will incorporate a Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP) development program designed to build the next generation of ELSI & HE research leaders. Where appropriate, SCN encourages ELSI & HE research projects to include wet lab investigators on project teams. Projects can support the work of individual research groups but should include collaborators from outside of the lead investigator¿s institution to further the Network and research impact.

Partnerships with companies/industry, not-for-profit organizations, foundations, charities, research institutions/hospitals/universities, and government bodies are a valuable component of project proposals. Direct Partnering Support and Leveraged Support (in-kind and/or cash) will increase the application's ranking.

Applications will also be ranked more highly if they involve collaborations with other Canadian-based investigators and bring together multidisciplinary expertise. Applications that integrate equity, diversity and inclusion into team composition, training and research methods may also rank higher.

NOTE: Consult your Faculty Associate Dean (Research) (ADR) regarding Faculty-specific deadlines and submission processes.

Principal Investigators: Complete a Research Management System (RMS) record, including a copy of your complete application, and submit this for approvals in RMS.

Postdocs, students, and trainees: For fellowships and externally-sponsored research training awards or opportunities, you must complete the Research Funding Application Approval (RFAA) Trainee PDF form, and submit it, along with a complete copy of the application, to Research Services at rsotrainee@ucalgary.ca. Trainees should not use RMS at this time.

Approvals: The University of Calgary requires that all funding applications be approved prior to submission. Approval requires signatures via either RMS or the RFAA Trainee form, in the following order:

• Principal Investigator
• Department Head
• Faculty ADR/Dean
• Research Services (on behalf of the Vice-President Research)

Read the Meaning of Grant Signatures policy to understand what your approval means. Please see the agency guidelines for details about which signatures are required on your application, as it may differ from internal requirements.

Late submissions: Late submissions will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances. If you submit your RMS record to Research Services after the internal deadline has passed, you must secure additional approvals. Please read: Late Applications Process.
