Behavioral and Social Sciences Awards
- Distinguished Career Contribution to Gerontology Award - presented annually to an individual whose contributions over the course of his or her career have articulated a novel theoretical or methodological perspective or synthesis that addresses a significant problem in the literature.
- Distinguished Mentorship Award - individuals who have fostered excellence in, and had a major impact on, the field by virtue of their mentoring, and whose inspiration is sought by students and colleagues.
- Mid-Career Innovation Award - acknowledges outstanding and innovative contributions of an established mid-career member of the Behavioral and Social Sciences Section. Contributions may include achievements across a wide range of scholarship, including research, practice, teaching, and program development and administration.
Biological Sciences Awards
- Nathan Shock New Investigator Award - given annually for innovative and influential publications by an early career professional (Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level).
Health Sciences Awards
- Joseph T. Freeman Award -lectureship in geriatrics and is awarded to a prominent clinician in the field of aging, both in research and practice.
- Excellence in Rehabilitation Award - acknowledges outstanding contributions in the field of rehabilitation of aging persons.
- Mid-Career Innovation Award - acknowledges outstanding contributions of an established mid-career GSA member of the Health Science Section to an innovative and influential area of the field in research and/or practice.
Social Research, Policy, and Practice Awards
- Barbara J. Berkman Award - career or lifetime achievement award. It recognizes individuals who have devoted decades of professional work to improving and expanding health care and age-related services for older persons.
- Elaine M. Brody Award - conferred by the Social Research, Policy, and Practice (SRPP) Section to a mid- or late-career member of the section in acknowledgement of outstanding contributions in social research, policy, and practice.
- Carroll L. Estes Award - conferred by the Social Research, Policy, and Practice Section to a member of the section in acknowledgment of outstanding early career contributions in social research, policy, and practice.
Summary
GSA recognizes outstanding advanced and early/mid-career individuals of all disciplines through a host of prestigious awards. The Society's awards program has a dual purpose; honoring outstanding leaders in the field of gerontology and focusing attention on new developments in the area of aging. The Society's award recipients serve as milestones in the history and development of gerontology.
