Culturally Responsive Practice in Alberta’s Urban Schools from the Perspectives of School Social Workers
Summary
This study examines how school social workers in Alberta provide culturally responsive support to Black students in junior high and high schools. The research aims to understand the challenges, successes, and systemic barriers that impact social work practice in educational settings.
Eligible participants must be licensed school social workers in Alberta with experience working with Black students. Participation involves two private interviews (60–90 minutes each), conducted online or in person at a convenient time. All information will remain confidential, and participants may withdraw at any time.
Findings from this study will help improve social work training, school policies, and student support initiatives.
Eligibility
Eligible ages: 18 to 65
Accepts healthy participants: Yes
Inclusion criteria:
To participate in this study, you must:
1. Be a licensed school social worker currently practicing in Alberta.
2. Have experience working with Black students in a K-12 school setting.
3. Be willing to take part in two private interviews (60–90 minutes each), either online or in person.
4. Be comfortable sharing your professional experiences related to culturally responsive social work practice.
5. Be available to participate at a time that works for you.
Participation is voluntary and confidential. You may choose to skip questions or withdraw at any time.
Exclusion criteria:
You cannot participate in this study if you:
1. Are not a licensed school social worker in Alberta.
2. Do not have experience working with Black students in junior high or high school setting.
3. Are not currently working in a school or education-related setting.
4. Are unable to participate in two interviews (60–90 minutes each).
5. Are uncomfortable discussing your professional experiences related to culturally responsive social work.
