The Nature-Connected Oncology Research Exploration (N-CORE) Survey

Summary

Nearly half of Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, and more people are surviving cancer than ever before. However, many survivors face long-term problems, like stomach and digestion issues and emotional problems. There is growing interest in nature-based programs, which are activities that involve spending time in nature, because they may help improve mental and physical health. For example, being in nature can boost mood and may help the gut’s healthy bacteria, but these benefits have not been well-studied in people with cancer.

What is the research goal? The Nature-Connected Oncology Research Exploration (N-CORE) program is a research project that aims to learn more about how nature can help people with cancer.

What is the research plan? N-CORE has three parts. First, we will review current studies to see what is already known about nature-based therapies for cancer. Second, we will survey people with cancer, caregivers and doctors to learn about their opinions and experiences with nature-based interventions. Third, we will run a small study where people with cancer will join a multi-week nature program to see if it is helpful.

What will we find? We would like to know the cancer communities’ interest in nature activities and develop a nature program for patients and caregivers. This research will tell us if nature is a safe and beneficial intervention to improve overall health of people with cancer. The results could lead to better programs and support for cancer survivors, helping them feel better both physically and emotionally.
