- Collaborators are any individuals who may make a significant contribution to the intellectual direction of the event or outreach activity. Collaborators do not need to be affiliated with an eligible Canadian post-secondary institution.
- An applicant / project director may apply for only one (1) Connection Grant per calendar year. An applicant may not apply for or hold more than one Connection Grant for the same event or outreach activity.
Summary
Connection Grants support events and outreach activities geared toward short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives. These events and activities represent opportunities to exchange knowledge and to engage on research issues of value to those participating. Events and outreach activities funded by a Connection Grant may often serve as a first step toward more comprehensive and longer-term projects potentially eligible for funding through other SSHRC funding opportunities. SSHRC welcomes applications involving research-creation, as well as aboriginal research.
Submission Process
- Complete the APPLICATION form and SSHRC CV in the SSHRC online system

NOTE: Consult your Faculty Associate Dean (Research) (ADR) regarding Faculty-specific deadlines and submission processes.
Principal Investigators: Complete a Research Management System (RMS) record, including a copy of your complete application, and submit this for approvals in RMS.
Postdocs, students, and trainees: For fellowships and externally-sponsored research training awards or opportunities, you must complete the Research Funding Application Approval (RFAA) Trainee PDF form, and submit it, along with a complete copy of the application, to Research Services at rsotrainee@ucalgary.ca. Trainees should not use RMS at this time.
Approvals: The University of Calgary requires that all funding applications be approved prior to submission. Approval requires signatures via either RMS or the RFAA Trainee form, in the following order:
- Principal Investigator
- Department Head
- Faculty ADR/Dean
- Research Services (on behalf of the Vice-President Research)
Read the Meaning of Grant Signatures policy to understand what your approval means. Please see the agency guidelines for details about which signatures are required on your application, as it may differ from internal requirements.
Late submissions: Late submissions will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances. If you submit your RMS record to Research Services after the internal deadline has passed, you must secure additional approvals. Please read: Late Applications Process.
Additional Information
There are two application streams:
- Individual Connection Grants: submitted by an individual applicant or by a team to conduct an event or outreach activity, or series thereof, within the applicant's area of expertise.
- Institutional Connection Grants: submitted by an institution to conduct an event or outreach activity, or series thereof, aligned with strategic objectives relevant to the institution's mission and mandate.
Applications will primarily be through the Individual stream. Those interested in pursuing an Institutional Connection Grant should contact their faculty Associate Dean (Research), and inform RSO (rsogrants@ucalgary.ca) to initiate discussions and coordinate with the Vice President Research.
- The maximum value of a Connection grant for an event is $25,000 while the value of a Connection grant for other outreach activity remains at $50,000 (with higher amounts considered on an exceptional basis).
- SSHRC will not fund the full cost of any connection event or outreach activity. Additional support such as cash and /or in kind contributions (excluding registration fees) equivalent to a minimum of 50% of the amount requested from SSHRC must come from other sources, such as sponsors.
- There are four (4) SSHRC deadlines per year: February 1, May 1, August 1, November 1 (if deadline falls on a holiday or weekend, it is pushed to the next business day).
- Funding decisions will be announced four (4) times per year at the end of each cycle: March, June, September, January.
