Eligibility
An individual holding an academic appointment at a University or other academic institution is eligible to serve as Principal Investigator. The Principal Investigator:
- must be a full-time and salaried employee of the Administering Institution (the applying Administering Institution cannot request for any support for salary and other employment benefits of the Principal Investigator from the Foundation);
- has the overall responsibility for the scientific direction and technical oversight of the research project; and
- will be the primary contact for the Foundation.
A Project Team applying for Pump-prime Funding will comprise a Principal Investigator; and any number of Co-Investigator(s) and/or Collaborator(s).
Summary
The Hong Kong Jockey Club Equine Welfare Research Foundation Limited was established in 2020 with the mandate to constantly improve the quality of life of Thoroughbred racehorses throughout and after their racing careers and to educate the public about equine health and welfare.
The 2024 HKJC Prime Pump Funding program provides funding support for “proof of concept” studies to test innovative and creative ideas with the clear aim of encouraging more substantial studies under the Foundation’s Major Research Grant or other grant opportunities. Applicants should clearly indicate how work could lead on to a more substantial study. Funding opportunities are open to researchers at university or other academic institutions.

Approvals
NOTE: Consult your Faculty Associate Dean (Research) (ADR) regarding Faculty-specific deadlines and submission processes.
Principal Investigators: Complete a Research Management System (RMS) record, including a copy of your complete application, and submit this for approvals in RMS.
Approvals: The University of Calgary requires that all funding applications be approved prior to submission. Approval requires signatures via RMS in the following order:
- Principal Investigator
- Department Head
- Faculty ADR/Dean
- Research Services (on behalf of the Vice-President Research)

Late submissions: Late submissions will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances.
