2024 Marathon of Hope Health Informatics & Data Science Award

Eligibility

To apply you should: 

• Be enrolled in a graduate (Master or Ph.D.) or post-doctoral research program in a field related to health informatics and data science at a Canadian institution   

• Applicants must not have previously been awarded an MOHCCN Health Informatics & Data Science award on a previous competition call.

• Have a mentor in the proposed research field from the sponsoring Institution. The mentor must assume responsibility and provide guidance for the research and be associated with a MOHCCN-funded study.  

• Applicants must be mentored by a researcher(s) (clinician and/or scientist) currently associated with a MOHCCN-funded study.

Summary

Purpose 

To provide outstanding young researchers in health informatics and related fields with funding to support high-quality research in precision oncology. The award is designed to support young researchers as they complete their studies and develop their careers, in close collaboration and mentorship with established Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network (MOHCCN) funded teams. Researchers currently enrolled in graduate (Master and Ph.D.) and post-doctoral studies in the fields of health informatics, data analytics, data science, computational biology, bioinformatics, and related fields at Canadian institutions are invited to apply.   

Scope 

Support under this Request for Applications (RFA) is targeted at high-quality, clinically related research using MOHCCN data, providing information that may form the basis of innovative cancer prevention, diagnosis and/or treatment. In general research supported by these awards should include, but may not be limited to, studies that develop new:  

• ways of generating therapeutically actionable biological cancer data  

• types of therapeutically actionable biological cancer data  

• tools to analyze existing rich, complex or large datasets, and  

• precision oncology trial design, conduct and analysis.  

Applicants must be mentored by researcher(s) (clinician and/or scientist) currently associated with a MOHCCN-funded study. Special consideration will be afforded to applicants who include plans for inclusion of marginalized populations in their work. 

Support Offered 

Up to ten awards of $40,000 each for one year to provide: 

• Salary support for award recipients; 

• Approved research expenses for the research project awarded. 

The sponsoring, eligible Canadian institution is encouraged to match the Marathon of Hope Health Informatics Award with a similar amount to be used to augment research expenses. Up to ten awards will be made for this round of the competition.

NOTE: Consult your Faculty Associate Dean (Research) (ADR) regarding Faculty-specific deadlines and submission processes.

Principal Investigators: Complete a Research Management System (RMS) record, including a copy of your complete application, and submit this for approvals in RMS.

Postdocs, students, and trainees: For fellowships and externally-sponsored research training awards or opportunities, you must complete the Research Funding Application Approval (RFAA) Trainee PDF form, and submit it, along with a complete copy of the application, to Research Services at rsotrainee@ucalgary.ca. Trainees should not use RMS at this time.

Approvals: The University of Calgary requires that all funding applications be approved prior to submission. Approval requires signatures via either RMS or the RFAA Trainee form, in the following order:

• Principal Investigator
• Department Head
• Faculty ADR/Dean
• Research Services (on behalf of the Vice-President Research)

Late submissions: Late submissions will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances.
