Eligibility
To be eligible for the Research Partnerships Program:
- Submitting organizations are limited to school authorities and faculties at post-secondary institutions. The submitting organization must be a member of the Alberta Research Network, as per the Member Organizations List.
- If multiple individuals in the partnership are from a post-secondary institution, at least one of the individuals must be from an Alberta Research Network member faculty.
- The primary investigator must be a faculty member at an Alberta post-secondary institution that conducts educational research.
- The research team must include appropriate school authority representatives.
- The research project must be directly relevant to one or more of the Research Priorities.
The award amount will be project-dependent, up to a maximum of $50,000 for studies under research priorities 1 to 4 (see above), and $20,000 for studies under priority 5 (see above). Studies with shorter timelines are welcomed, as they may support the system’s responsiveness. It is expected that the duration of a study and its budget will be positively correlated.
Summary
The Research Partnerships Program (RPP) facilitates opportunities for research connections between post-secondary research institutions and school authorities. This program is intended to support collaborative research projects that focus on research questions most relevant to Alberta’s education system.
Funds provided by the program will support research priorities that have the potential to impact the ECS to Grade 12 education system and improve outcomes for students.
Research projects eligible for this call must be directly relevant to one or more of the following research priorities and must focus on some or all grades from early childhood to Grade 12:
- Learning gaps primarily at higher grades
- Social-emotional wellness
- Learning environments
- Equity
- Secondary data analysis of Alberta results in international and pan-Canadian studies
Overhead rate: 10%
Submission Process:
- Complete the full application according to the agency's guidelines. A complete application includes the proposal, itemised budget, letters of support, and the Application for Conditional Grant form.
- To initiate internal approvals, complete the Pre-Award/Applications record in RMS, attach your completed application, and submit for approvals from your Department Head and faculty Associate Dean (Research). Important: When submitting in RMS, please ensure that you allow time for academic approvals prior to the Research Services review deadline of November 28 at 12:00 pm. Please also note that approvers do not routinely receive notifications that an application is awaiting their approval. We suggest that you reach out to your approvers to let them know you have submitted an application for their review.
- Once these approvals are obtained, RMS will automatically forward the application record to Research Services for institutional review and approval.
- Research Services will review, provide feedback (by email) if necessary, and secure the institutional approval. If digital or wet-ink signatures are required, we will provide the capping institutional signature and will advise when ready.
- The applicant must submit the application to the agency by December 1, 2022 at 4:30 pm to: EDC.RPP@gov.ab.ca, using the subject line RPP CFP6 Submission.
*Note: The Proposal, Letters of Support, and Application for Conditional Grant Funding Form must be three separate attachments.
Please refer to the fact sheet, Get the Facts: The 2022 RPP Call for Proposals, before finalizing your submission.

Approvals
NOTE: Consult your Faculty Associate Dean (Research) (ADR) regarding Faculty-specific deadlines and submission processes.
Principal Investigators: Complete a Research Management System (RMS) record, including a copy of your complete application, and submit this for approvals in RMS.
Postdocs, students, and trainees: For fellowships and externally-sponsored research training awards or opportunities, you must complete the Research Funding Application Approval (RFAA) Trainee PDF form, and submit it, along with a complete copy of the application, to Research Services at rsotrainee@ucalgary.ca. Trainees should not use RMS at this time.
Approvals: The University of Calgary requires that all funding applications be approved prior to submission. Approval requires signatures via either RMS or the RFAA Trainee form, in the following order:
- Principal Investigator
- Department Head
- Faculty ADR/Dean
- Research Services (on behalf of the Vice-President Research)
Read the Meaning of Grant Signatures policy to understand what your approval means. Please see the agency guidelines for details about which signatures are required on your application, as it may differ from internal requirements.
Late submissions: Late submissions will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances. If you submit your RMS record to Research Services after the internal deadline has passed, you must secure additional approvals. Please read: Late Applications Process.
Additional Information
Research partnerships that meet the eligibility requirements are invited to submit a short research proposal and a completed Grant Application form to Alberta Education for the Research Partnerships Program. Both the proposal, including letters of support and the Application for Conditional Grant form are due no later than 4:30 p.m. on December 1, 2022.
Research Branch is not responsible for failures (technical or otherwise) that may result in a proposal not being received by the 2022 Call for Proposals closing date and time. Only research proposals that meet all five eligibility requirements and are submitted on time will be considered for funding.
Funding can be used to support:
- collaborative planning;
- conducting the research;
- participating in research meetings hosted by Research Branch; and
- disseminating (within Canada) knowledge generated through research activities.
