for funds up to $600,000 over 5 years ($120,000 from the AgriSafety Program per year) plus a minimum
equivalent amount of matching dollars provided by the Project team from other sources. Matching dollars
do not need to be secured in order to submit a Letter of Intent but will need to be confirmed by January

the AgriSafety Program is considered a government contribution as 100% of funds are from AAFC. A

researcher time as a matching contribution is considered in-kind.

Letters of Intent from university-based, industry-based, and not-for-profit based organizations/teams are
welcome. Organizations should be legal entities able to enter into a contract with Agrivita Canada and able
to be the primary financial recipient of research funding/contributions.

Summary

The Canadian AgriSafety Applied Science Program of Agrivita Canada aims to stimulate and support
applied science and innovation targeting sustainability and productivity in Canadian agriculture by
improving environmental, occupational, and workplace health and safety for farmers, their families and
agricultural workers. Visit www.agrivita.ca for more information on Agrivita and the AgriSafety Program.

Agrivita Canada is seeking Letters of Intent (LOI’s) for potential research projects to address priority areas
for applied science and innovation in health and safety in Canadian agriculture that fit in the scope of
AAFC's new policy framework, SCAP. Projects approved by Agrivita’s peer review process will be included
in a proposal that will be submitted to AAFC’s Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (SCAP)
AgriScience Projects Stream (2023-2028), for potential funding in October 2023. Projects selected by AAFC
for funding will be included in Agrivita’s new AgriSafety Program.

Based on occupational hygiene principles, the hierarchy of control, as well as Agrivita’s national
consultation process, the 2023-2028 AgriSafety Program seeks LOI’s for applied science projects that align
with 4 priority research streams:

  • Stream 1: Stress and Mental Health
  • Stream 2: Environment and Climate Change
  • Stream 3: Health and Safety in Underrepresented Populations
  • Stream 4: Control of injury and illness

Principal Investigators: Complete a Research Management System (RMS) record, including a copy of your complete application, and submit this for approvals in RMS.

Postdocs, students, and trainees: For fellowships and externally-sponsored research training awards or opportunities, you must complete the Research Funding Application Approval (RFAA) Trainee PDF form, and submit it, along with a complete copy of the application, to Research Services at rsotrainee@ucalgary.ca. Trainees should not use RMS at this time.

Approvals: The University of Calgary requires that all funding applications be approved prior to submission. Approval requires signatures via either RMS or the RFAA Trainee form, in the following order:

  • Principal Investigator
  • Department Head
  • Faculty ADR/Dean
  • Research Services (on behalf of the Vice-President Research)

Read the Meaning of Grant Signatures policy to understand what your approval means. Please see the agency guidelines for details about which signatures are required on your application, as it may differ from internal requirements.

Late submissions: Late submissions will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances. If you submit your RMS record to Research Services after the internal deadline has passed, you must secure additional approvals. Please read: Late Applications Process.

Additional Information

Applications are submitted through the Research Management System (RMS) to initiate internal approvals.  Please note, when the RMS record finally reaches Research Services by the internal deadline, it should contain all the relevant Department and Faculty approvals, so please allow additional time for these steps.  Late applications will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances.  If you submit your RMS record to Research Services after the internal deadline has passed, you will need to secure additional late approvals from your Faculty Associate Dean (Research) and the Executive Director, Research Services.  A link to RMS can be found here which includes training resources.

LOI:

  1. Download and complete LOI application form here: https://www.agrivita.ca/new-applications-2022/loi-application-form-2022-fil.pdf
  2. Upload a copy of your final and complete LOI application to the RMS Application record, and submit for academic approvals.  Please ensure that you allow enough time for academic approvals prior to the Research Services (RSO) final internal deadline of NOON, November 25th, 2022.
  3. RMS will notify you that institutional approval has been provided and provide any institutional signatures if needed. You may now submit to Agrivita Program Manager nadia.smith@agrivita.ca by Wednesday November 30, 2022.
  4. Applicants will be notified as to the decision concerning their LOI by December 9, 2022.
