For an application to be eligible:
- The NPA must be an independent researcher appointed at an eligible institution (see the CIHR Application Administration Guide – Part 4) at the time of application.
- The Institution Paid must be authorized to administer CIHR funds before the funding can be released (see Administration of Funds).
- The NPA cannot currently hold a Sleep Research Consortium grant as a Nominated Principal Investigator (NPI).
- The NPA must have successfully completed one of the sex- and gender-based analysis training modules available online through the CIHR Institute of Gender and Health and have submitted a Certificate of Completion (see How to Apply section).
- In addition to the NPA, the Research Team must include Theme Leads responsible for the six (6) Consortium Cross-Cutting Themes identified.
- The Indigenous Theme Lead must be:
- An independent researcher or knowledge user who self-identifies as Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit or Métis) and/or provides evidence of having meaningful and culturally safe involvement with Indigenous Peoples;
OR - An Indigenous Elder and/or an Indigenous Knowledge Keeper*;
OR - An Indigenous non-governmental organization;
OR - An individual associated with an Indigenous non-governmental organization.
Note: A Theme Lead cannot lead more than two Themes.
- An independent researcher or knowledge user who self-identifies as Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit or Métis) and/or provides evidence of having meaningful and culturally safe involvement with Indigenous Peoples;
- The Indigenous Theme Lead must be:
- In addition to the NPA, at a minimum, each Research Team must include the following:
- Early career researcher(s) and/or mid-career researcher(s) as Co-Principal Applicant(s) and ;
- Trainee(s) and;
- Knowledge user(s); and
- Person(s) with lived/living experience: In the context of this funding opportunity, this includes individuals with personal experience of a health issue, and formal and informal caregivers, including family and friends.
*A Knowledge Keeper (also known as a Knowledge Holder or Knowledge Guardian) is an Indigenous person, regardless of age, who possesses the Indigenous cultural knowledge necessary for the proposed research project or activities, as recognized, validated, and authenticated by the Indigenous community.
Summary
The purpose of this funding opportunity is to support one (1) additional Research Team to join the two recently funded Research Teams and the Coordination and Knowledge Mobilization Centre (CKMC) in the Sleep Research Consortium (Consortium) focused on sleep hygiene and insomnia through the lifecycle. The Consortium has a broad mandate that includes expertise across the CIHR research pillars (i.e., biomedical/basic; clinical; health systems services; and population health), multiple sectors (e.g., government, charities/not-for-profits, and private organizations/industry), multiple stakeholders (e.g., communities, people with lived/living experience, families, caregivers), Indigenous Peoples (First Nations, Inuit or Métis Peoples); and focused on co-creating new knowledge and mobilizing knowledge to improve health outcomes as they relate to insomnia and sleep deprivation.
This funding opportunity will support one (1) grant relevant to the following areas. Proposed research projects must be relevant to at least one (1) area but may also be relevant to multiple areas.
- Sleep biology: focused on defining clear biological measures and targets for sleep in order to promote sleep health, and to prevent, diagnose and treat insomnia and sleep deprivation;
- Sleep and performance: effects of insomnia and sleep deprivation as it relates to school, work, life, and play; and/or,
- Other: any other research area related to sleep hygiene and insomnia that is relevant to the Consortium.

Complete registration to CIHR due 6pm Calgary time on October 12, 2022. Registration is not required to go through RSO.

Full Application
1. Full applications, plus approval in the Research Management System (RMS) (https://research.ucalgary.ca/conduct-research/additional-resources/research-management-system-rms), will be required by RSO by noon on December 21, 2022. Please be sure to select "Submitted for approvals" (Under Save & Progress) in RMS in good time to allow for approvals from your Department Head and/or ADR prior to the Research Services deadline. Consult your department and faculty for more information on their approval processes and timelines. A step sheet for creating an application record in RMS is available in the Resources section below.
A Research Funding Application Approvals (RFAA) form is not required - as approval are collected electronically in RMS.
Do not submit through ResearchNet until RSO's signature has been granted.
2. Once institutional signature has been obtained, the NPA will receive an automated message from RMS to their ucalgary email address. The CIHR signature page can then be accessed in RMS. Upload the CIHR signature page including the routing slip in the Print/Upload Signature Pages task in ResearchNet by 6:00PM Calgary time on January 2, 2022.

NOTE: Consult your Faculty Associate Dean (Research) (ADR) regarding Faculty-specific deadlines and submission processes.
Principal Investigators: Complete a Research Management System (RMS) record, including a copy of your complete application, and submit this for approvals in RMS.
Postdocs, students, and trainees: For fellowships and externally-sponsored research training awards or opportunities, you must complete the Research Funding Application Approval (RFAA) Trainee PDF form, and submit it, along with a complete copy of the application, to Research Services at rsotrainee@ucalgary.ca. Trainees should not use RMS at this time.
Approvals: The University of Calgary requires that all funding applications be approved prior to submission. Approval requires signatures via either RMS or the RFAA Trainee form, in the following order:
- Principal Investigator
- Department Head
- Faculty ADR/Dean
- Research Services (on behalf of the Vice-President Research)

Late submissions: Late submissions will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances.
