Applicants must be pursuing research in transdisciplinary Israel Studies and will have earned their Ph.D. in any related discipline no more than five (5) years of the start date of the award, except with special circumstances.* If the degree is pending at time of application, the degree must be completed before the start date.
*Relevant circumstances might include administrative responsibilities, maternity/parental leave, child-rearing, illness, disability, cultural or community responsibilities, socio-economic context, health-related family responsibilities, war and geopolitical unrest, trauma and loss, or the COVID-19 pandemic.
Summary
The Postdoctoral Associate will conduct activities to further the vision and purpose of the programme, which is to advance research in transdisciplinary Israel Studies within the Faculty of Arts and contribute to the University’s priority in the advancement of pluralism. The postdoctoral scholar will:
- Engage in independent and collaborative research that contributes to the strength and breadth of expertise in Israel Studies in the Faculty of Arts
- Generate unique learning opportunities for students and to support the training of experts in Israel Studies
- Work with the Supervisor and/or Program Coordinator of the Jenny Belzberg Postdoctoral Fellowship in Israel Studies to connect with Jewish and other cultural and faith-based communities to advance better understanding of Israel Studies, support pluralism in scholarly work and to co-build a program of community events.
Qualifications:
- Applicants must be pursuing research in transdisciplinary Israel Studies and will have earned their Ph.D. in any related discipline no more than five (5) years of the start date of the award, except with special circumstances.* If the degree is pending at time of application, the degree must be completed before the start date.
- Excellent teaching, facilitation and presentation skills
- Strong community-relations skills, or promise thereof
Additional Information
Awardees are eligible to teach one .5 course per term. While the FoA will provide the salary for a teaching appointment related to this award, the granting of teaching assignments is subject to Human Resources and Faculty Association of the University of Calgary (TUCFA) regulations. Any teaching assignment must be made as a separate appointment from the postdoctoral appointment.

Assessment Criteria
Review criteria will include, but not necessarily be limited to:
- Quality of the candidate (e.g., impact and significance of previous research and creative contributions, evidence of research leadership); respecting the stage and nature of the applicant’s career path
- Quality of the proposed project, in terms of novelty/originality, feasibility, and expected impact (e.g., for discovery, society, policy, practice, innovation, etc.)
- Quality of proposed community engagement activities
- Institutional synergy, including alignment of the proposed project with UCalgary research and innovation priorities

Incentive funding
When a Jenny Belzberg Postdoctoral Fellowship in Israel Studies award holder receives additional stipend-based fellowship funding (extramural or intramural), the Jenny Belzberg Postdoctoral Fellowship will reduce to cover the difference between new award’s annual value and $65,000, plus $2,750 incentive annual incentive of $2,750, pro-rated for the remaining period of the award
