The Sexual Health Knowledge and Needs of Sexual Minorities People with Developmental and Intellectual Disabilities and Their Family Members in Alberta, Canada
Summary
The goal of this project is to better understand the sexual health related experiences and needs of adults labeled/with developmental and intellectual disabilities in Alberta, Canada. This study also seeks to understand the experiences of parent(s) and sibling(s) about how they are supporting the intimate lives of their family members labeled/with disabilities. We are seeking participants in three cities: Calgary, Edmonton, and Lethbridge.
This study will include interviewing 30 adults labeled/with intellectual disabilities about:
- their knowledge and needs related to sexual health
- their experiences in constructing their sexual and gender identities
- their experiences navigating 2SLGBTQ+* spaces
- their experiences navigating disability focused spaces
This study will also interview 15 parents and 15 siblings of 2SLGBTQ+ individuals with intellectual disabilities. These interviews will focus on:
- their insights about how they are supporting the intimate lives of their family members
- what they feel they need/want to better support the intimate lives of their family member
- their experiences navigating 2SLGBTQ+ and disability spaces for/with their child/sibling.
*Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning and other sexual orientations and gender identities
Eligibility
Eligible gender: Male, Female, Transgender, Other
Eligible ages: 18 to 100
Accepts healthy participants: Yes
Inclusion criteria:
- 18+ years old
- Self-identify as a person with an intellectual or developmental disability
- Self-identify as 2SLGBTQ+* (Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning and additional sexual orientations and gender identities)
- Be their own legal guardians
Participants for the second half of this study:
-18+ years old
-Be a parent or sibling of an individual who self identifies as 2SLGBTQ+ (Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning and additional sexual orientations and gender identities) and as a person with an intellectual or developmental disability
- Be their own legal guardians
Exclusion criteria:
This study is currently unable to include:
- sign-language users
- non-English speakers
- individuals who are unclear about their legal guardianship status - individuals who are not their own legal guardian
- individuals living in outside of Calgary, Edmonton, and Lethbridge
