Stroke-IMPaCT
Summary
Our study at the Foothills Hospital aims to understand changes in the immune system and inflammation that may be responsible for cognitive decline after a stroke. We are recruiting control participants for this study. We will collect blood samples, brain imaging, and cognitive testing. The time commitment is 2 hours every year for 4 years.
Eligibility
Eligible ages: 45 to 80
Accepts healthy participants: Yes
Inclusion criteria:
1. Aged 45 years or over
2. No history of any previous stroke
3. One or more vascular risk factors (e.g., diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure)
4. Fluent in written and spoken English
5. Living independently in the community
6. Willing and able to provide consent
Exclusion criteria:
1. History of infection treated with antibiotics in the preceding 6 weeks
2. Current treatment with IL-1 blockade or established immune-suppressant therapy (e.g. IL-1Ra or IL-1 antibodies), or treatment within the last 3 months
3. Pre-existing neurological, psychiatric, or other condition (e.g. blindness) that would make it difficult to accurately assess neurologic and/or cognitive outcomes
4. Currently participating in a clinical trial of investigation medicinal product (CTIMP) or device trial
5. Contraindications to MR contrast imaging (e.g., claustrophobia, brain implant)
