Alberta Innovates

Competitions which run through the External Grants Team include a 3-business day internal deadline requirement for submission in RMS.

Alberta Innovates (AI) is Alberta’s largest and only cross-sectoral research and innovation (R&I) agency and is uniquely positioned to propel great ideas forward to improve the lives of Albertans. AI supports R&I aligned with Government of Alberta priorities as outlined in Alberta’s Recovery Plan, launched in June 2020, and the Alberta Technology and Innovation Strategy (ATIS), approved in February 2022. AI is governed by a government-appointed board and reports to the Minister of Technology and Innovation. AI receives a large part of its funding through the Ministry with additional funding from other provincial and federal government entities, industry, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and revenues generated through its applied research subsidiaries, C-FER and InnoTech.

Alberta Innovates has five strategic areas of focus:

  • Artificial intelligence
  • Clean resource technologies
  • Digital health
  • Entrepreneurial ecosystem
  • Smart agriculture
