There are 2 categories of partnerships that can apply:

  1. Existing partnerships to foster new research and/or research-related partnership activities that are distinct from the partnership’s previous/ongoing partnership activities.
  2. New partnerships to foster new research and/or research-related partnership activities that are undertaken by partnerships in their initial stages.

The research must be delivered by multi-disciplinary teams (with members of the academic community that belong to social sciences, life and natural sciences, and engineering working together) to examine areas holistically, using gender-based analysis plus (GBA+) analytical lens. The academic community may work in collaboration with CMHC researchers to deliver the work, share knowledge, and interrogate the same data sources. Projects whose primary objective is curriculum development are not eligible for funding under this funding opportunity.

Applications must be submitted by an eligible Canadian post-secondary institution that meets the institutional eligibility requirements.

Applicants must be affiliated with an eligible Canadian institution and prepares the application on behalf of the host institution and the formal partnership.

Canadian and international individuals and institutions are eligible to be co-directors or co-applicants if they are formally affiliated with any of the following:

  • Canadian: eligible post-secondary institution; not-for-profit organization; philanthropic foundation; think tank; or municipal, territorial or provincial government.
  • Postdoctoral researchers who are affiliated with a post-secondary institution are eligible to be co-directors or co-applicants.

Collaborators: Any individual who may make a significant contribution to the project. Individuals from the private sector or federal government may only participate as collaborators.

Partner organizations may be Canadian or international institutions or organizations (public, private, not-for-profit) of any type.

An individual may not be an applicant (project director), co-director or co-applicant on more than one application in the competition.

Summary

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)-SSHRC Partnerships for National Housing Strategy (NHS) Longitudinal Outcomes Research provides support for new and existing formal partnerships for five years with funding up to $410,000 for the first year and up to $1.1 million per year for the following years 2-5 for a maximum total of up to $4.8 million over five years. The overall goal of the Partnership Grants for NHS Longitudinal Outcomes Research is to support prospective cohort research on outcomes of NHS and other investments in affordable housing. The CMHC-SSHRC Partnership Grant supports research and related activities that examines:

  • The long-term health, socio-economic, and climate change outcomes of investments in affordable housing
  • The links between housing, health, socio-economic, and environmental factors at the household and community levels

Funding is intended for large teams of post-secondary institutions and organizations of various types working in formal collaboration to advance interdisciplinary research, research training and/or knowledge mobilization across the social sciences and humanities, health and life sciences, and natural sciences and engineering. CMHC-SSHRC Partnership Grants are expected to respond to the objectives of the Insight program.

Submission Process

The CMHC-SSHRC PG program has a single stage adjudication process. Institutional and agency milestones are listed here and additional instructions follow.

Interested applicants must inform RSO of their intent to apply ASAP via email to ipd@ucalgary.ca, or by October 5, 2022. Additional application information will be provided to prospective applicants.

Applications, plus approval in the Research Management System (RMS), will be required by RSO by 9am, November 15, 2022. Complete the Pre-Award Application in RMS. Please use the “CMHC-SSHRC Partnership Grant” funding opportunity and be sure to select "Submitted for approvals" (Under Save & Progress) in RMS in good time to allow for approvals from your Department Head and/or ADR prior to the Research Services deadline. Consult your department and faculty for more information on their approval processes and timelines. A step sheet for creating an application record in RMS is available in the Resources section below.

Approvals

NOTE: Consult your Faculty Associate Dean (Research) (ADR) regarding Faculty-specific deadlines and submission processes.

Principal Investigators: Complete a Research Management System (RMS) record, including a copy of your complete application, and submit this for approvals in RMS.

Postdocs, students, and trainees: For fellowships and externally-sponsored research training awards or opportunities, you must complete the Research Funding Application Approval (RFAA) Trainee PDF form, and submit it, along with a complete copy of the application, to Research Services at rsotrainee@ucalgary.ca. Trainees should not use RMS at this time.

Approvals: The University of Calgary requires that all funding applications be approved prior to submission. Approval requires signatures via either RMS or the RFAA Trainee form, in the following order:

  • Principal Investigator
  • Department Head
  • Faculty ADR/Dean
  • Research Services (on behalf of the Vice-President Research)

Late submissions: Late submissions will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances. Projects being led elsewhere: If the University of Calgary is to be named as a partner organization, the co-applicant from the University of Calgary is encouraged to initiate discussions with their Faculty and contact Research Services (ipd@ucalgary.ca) by November 1, 2022. Research Services will provide information on the partnership process and assist with fulfilling partner requirements.
