Summary
The Cystinosis Research Foundation (CRF) was established in 2003 with the goal of aggressively pursuing new and better treatments for cystinosis and ultimately a cure. CRF supports laboratory research, clinical and translational research aimed at understanding the pathogenesis of cystinosis as well as specific areas of cystinosis research that remain under-studied (e.g., neurological complications, endocrine complications, myopathy, hypogonadism, bone disease). CRF is interested in supporting new investigators and encourage them to apply either as research fellows or co-PIs.
2023 Spring Cystinosis Research Grant will fund proposals to improve the immediate care of children and adults with cystinosis and to develop a new understanding and treatment of cystinosis in an effort to help these patients in the future. Global calls for grant applications will be made twice each year. Research grants are awarded for 1-2 years. Please note that the earliest start date for research projects submitted for this cycle is September 1, 2023.

Approvals
NOTE: Consult your Faculty Associate Dean (Research) (ADR) regarding Faculty-specific deadlines and submission processes.
Principal Investigators: Complete a Research Management System (RMS) record, including a copy of your complete application, and submit this for approvals in RMS.
Postdocs, students, and trainees: For fellowships and externally-sponsored research training awards or opportunities, you must complete the Research Funding Application Approval (RFAA) Trainee PDF form, and submit it, along with a complete copy of the application, to Research Services at rsotrainee@ucalgary.ca. Trainees should not use RMS at this time.
Approvals: The University of Calgary requires that all funding applications be approved prior to submission. Approval requires signatures via either RMS or the RFAA Trainee form, in the following order:
- Principal Investigator
- Department Head
- Faculty ADR/Dean
- Research Services (on behalf of the Vice-President Research)
Read the Meaning of Grant Signatures policy to understand what your approval means. Please see the agency guidelines for details about which signatures are required on your application, as it may differ from internal requirements.
Late submissions: Late submissions will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances. If you submit your RMS record to Research Services after the internal deadline has passed, you must secure additional approvals. Please read: Late Applications Process.
Additional Information
Postdoctoral Fellowships: The Cystinosis Research Foundation has also created a postdoctoral research fellowship program to attract qualified, promising investigators to establish careers in cystinosis research. The fellow’s stipend should be the usual amount for such a trainee at the given applicant’s institution. The total award cannot exceed $75,000 per year including overhead. Awards will generally be for a period of 1-2 years. Postdocs can reach out to us about the fellowship stream at postdoc@ucalgary.ca.
