The Tang Prize in the Rule of Law recognizes individual(s) or institution(s) who have made significant contributions to the rule of law, reflected not only in the achievement of the candidate(s) in terms of the advancement of legal theory or practice, but also in the realization of the rule of law in contemporary societies through the influences or inspiration of the work of the candidate(s).
The Tang Prize in Sustainable Development recognizes those who have made extraordinary contributions to the sustainable development of human societies, especially through groundbreaking innovations in science and technology.
Honoring innovations in the field of Sinology, the Prize showcases Chinese culture and its contributions to the development of human civilization.
The Tang Prize in Biopharmaceutical Science recognizes original biopharmaceutical or biomedical research that has led to significant advances towards preventing, diagnosing and/or treating major human diseases to improve human health.
Summary
The Tang Prize was founded in 2012 with a simple mission: to biennially recognize and support groundbreaking research and developments of significance to humanity.
All individuals are born equal, and everyone, including states and international organizations, is accountable to the law. For the purpose of the Tang Prize, the Rule of Law encompasses due process and substantive justice, and champions peace, human rights, and sustainable development in order to serve the common good of humankind and nature. 
There are four categories of awards:
Sustainable Development
The Tang Prize in Sustainable Development recognizes those who have made extraordinary contributions to the sustainable development of human societies, especially through groundbreaking innovations in science and technology.
Biopharmaceutical Science
The Tang Prize in Biopharmaceutical Science recognizes original biopharmaceutical or biomedical research that has led to significant advances towards preventing, diagnosing and/or treating major human diseases to improve human health.
Sinology
The Tang Prize in Sinology recognizes the study of Sinology in its broadest sense, awarding research on China and its related fields, such as Chinese thought, history, philology, linguistics, archaeology, philosophy, religion, traditional canons, literature, and art (excluding literary and art works). Honoring innovations in the field of Sinology, the Prize showcases Chinese culture and its contributions to the development of human civilization.
Rule of Law
All individuals are born equal, and everyone, including states and international organizations, is accountable to the law. For the purpose of the Tang Prize, the Rule of Law encompasses due process and substantive justice, and champions peace, human rights, and sustainable development in order to serve the common good of humankind and nature. The Tang Prize in the Rule of Law recognizes individual(s) or institution(s) who have made significant contributions to the rule of law, reflected not only in the achievement of the candidate(s) in terms of the advancement of legal theory or practice, but also in the realization of the rule of law in contemporary societies through the influences or inspiration of the work of the candidate(s).

We request that you treat your nomination as highly confidential, and to refrain from making known your nomination, even to the nominee.
All nominations require an institutional signature. Please prepare a nomination package, as described below, and send to researchawards@ucalgary.ca no later than September 22, 2023 at NOON.
Please address the following five aspects as fully as possible, on separate sheets:
1. Nominee Information
Name of the individual
Institution affiliation and title
Mailing address
2. Please provide background information of the nominee(s), including but not limited to those relating to academic and professional profile, major recognition received, and additional means to acquire further information deemed appropriate.
3. Please describe the contribution made by the nominee(s) to the realization of the rule of law in contemporary societies, especially in terms of major and enduring breakthroughs brought about by legal research and/or by legal practices.
4. In your opinion, what distinguished the contribution of the nominee(s) that makes its recognition by the Tang Prize in Rule of Law particularly appropriate?
5. Please make a list of materials that are sent in support of the nomination, including but not limited to
Scholarly works done by the nominee(s);
Judgements, judicial opinions, documents in legal representation, or other relevant judicial documents rendered by the nominee(s);
Materials that demonstrate tangible progress in the rule of law brought about by initiating or putting into practice a paradigm, mechanism, regime or institution
Necessary background information of the jurisdictions concerned.
The Tang Prize: Nomination & Selection
The nomination and selection process of the biennial Tang Prize takes place in accordance with the following timetable, with the second year being the awarding year:
May of the first year: The Tang Prize Selection Committee sends invitations to individuals and/or institutions and ask them to nominate qualified candidates.
End of September in the first year: Deadline for submitting nominations.
From October of the first year to May of the second year: The Tang Prize Selection Committee for each prize category reviews the nominations, chooses one to three finalists, and submits a list of finalists with supporting documents to the Foundation’s Board of Directors for final approval.
May of the second year: The Foundation’s Board of Directors reviews and approves the list.
June 18-21 of the second year: The Foundation announces winners.
September of the second year: The Foundation holds the award ceremony and related events.
