Summary

This funding opportunity is part of the eighth call for applications of the Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD). As outlined in this eighth GACD call, the research to be undertaken will focus on implementation research addressing NCD risk factors associated with city environments and related health inequities. Applicants should review the definitions of 'non-communicable diseases' and 'NCD risk factors associated with city environments' in the call glossary to ensure that the conditions and risk factors that they are studying are within scope. All applications must include implementation research outcomesFootnote 9. Guidance for study design and conducting sex/gender-responsive and intersectional research can be found under Resources on the GACD call webpage.

Research Areas

The CIHR and IDRC funding opportunity launched under this GACD program will support projects that are examining how to implement one or more evidence-based interventions known to prevent or reduce exposure to NCD risk factor(s) associated with city environments across the following three themes presented in the GACD call:

  1. Behavioural change interventions,
  2. Interventions that focus on modifying the built environment, and/or
  3. Interventions that improve access to primary and secondary prevention services.

This funding opportunity will support projects relevant to the following research areas:

Priority Research Area: Climate change and NCDs in cities

Projects in this research area must take an approach that includes interventions focused on reducing the impact of climate change on NCDs across one or more of the above three themes.

Projects including a focus on populations facing conditions of vulnerability in Canada must also include an equivalent focus on populations in LMICs.

Open Research Area

Projects in this research area are open to any of the above three themes. Projects including a focus on populations facing conditions of vulnerability in Canada must also include a focus on populations in LMICs and/or international Indigenous Peoples (including Indigenous Peoples in other HICs).

General CIHR Policies and IDRC Policies

Before submitting an application to this funding opportunity, applicants should review the relevant policies and guidelines on the CIHR Funding Policies and General IDRC Funding Guidelines pages to ensure understanding of their responsibilities and expectations.

CIHR encourages applications to adopt the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research's (CCGHR) principles for global health research: authentic partnering, inclusion, shared benefits, commitment to the future, responsiveness to causes of inequities, and humility that all encourage researchers and others involved to adopt more ethical and equitable forms of global health research.

Webinar: The GACD Secretariat has made available resources to provide guidance on applying to this call.

Partner Linkage Tool: GACD has developed a collaborator forum to assist applicants in identifying project partners. In addition, the Global Health Researchers' Directory is a free members-only platform designed to foster connections, build networks, and facilitate meaningful and equitable collaboration and partnership amongst global health researchers based in Canada and lower-middle-income countries (LMICs).

Co-funding: Applicants interested in discussing their eligibility for co-funding from participating GACD member agencies should contact the GACD Secretariat as soon as possible.
