DIRECTION Trial: Dialectal Behaviour Therapy to Enhance Health Behaviour Change for Adolescents living with Obesity

Summary

The purpose of this research study is to evaluate an emotion-focused therapy that incorporates elements of mindfulness, distress tolerance, and relationship support. We want to learn if this therapy, called Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) will help improve quality of life and weight management in youth living with obesity.

Eligibility

Currently recruiting participants: Yes

Eligible ages: 14 to 17

Inclusion criteria:

1. Between 14-17 years of age
2. Have an elevated BMI
3. Be willing and able to comply with study procedures

Exclusion criteria:

1. More than one mental health co-morbidity
2. Being treated with medication for obesity
3. Taking steroids for another condition
4. Currently being treated atypical antipsychotics
5. Currently and/or in the past 12 months have been prescribed any weight loss medication(s) including Ozempic.
6. Have an orthopedic injury or chronic illness that would prevent them from performing the intervention
7. Have experienced weight loss or enrolled in weight loss program in the six months prior to the study
8. Have a self-reported history of alcoholism or drug abuse
9. Have a history of self-harm or suicide attempts in the last 12 months
10. Currently enrolled in psychotherapy or DBT
11. Parents do not approve of participation
12. Unable/unwilling to give assent/consent
