Transforming Crisis Line Response for LGBTQ+ Callers and Texters Across Canada

Summary

We want to hear from LGBTQ+ community members about their experiences with crisis lines. Crisis and text phone lines are commonly offered resources, but there is little research on how these services support LGBTQ+ people. We want to know what your experiences have been like when contacting crisis lines. We are also interested in hearing from people who decided NOT to reach out to a crisis line when they were in a crisis.

This study will use both online surveys and Zoom interviews. You can complete both, if you wish. Online Interviews will take about an hour. Interview participants will receive a $30 CAD gift card. All survey participants will be entered into a prize draw for a $200 CAD gift card.

Eligibility

Currently recruiting participants: Yes

Eligible ages: 18 to 80

Accepts healthy participants: Yes

Inclusion criteria:

1) Must be over the age of 18.

2) Individuals who self-identify as LGBTQ+ who have called or texted a crisis line in Canada.

3) Individuals who self-identify as LGBTQ+ who have been in crisis who would have called or texted a crisis line in Canada if there were not barriers (as defined by them).

4) Those who have a computer or laptop accessible to complete the Zoom interview or online survey.

Exclusion criteria:

1) People who are currently having thoughts of suicide.
2) People with active psychosis symptoms.
We would ask the individual if they have been diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum or another psychotic disorder and whether they are experiencing any symptoms in the moment. The DSM-5-TR defines schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders as someone experiencing "abnormalities in one or more of the following give domains: delusions, hallucinations, disorganized thinking (speech), grossly disorganized or abnormal motor behavior (including catatonia), and negative symptoms" (DSM-5-TR, p. 101). In the event that they identify that they are, we will provide them resources and identify that at this time they cannot participate in the study. In the event that the individual displays the identified DSM-5-TR criteria, we will stop the interview and provide the resources. These participants will still be able to receive the gift card.
3) Those under the age of 18.
4) Those without accessible technology to carry out a Zoom interview or survey.
5) Those who do not identify as LGBTQ+.
