Multi-institution project coordination
The University of Calgary Research Services Office offers a variety of supports to assist you in applying for multi-institutional research projects as the primary investigator or a co-applicant.
Assistance is provided by the Institutional Programs Division (IPD) of Research Services for the following programs:
- Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI)
- NSERC Collaborative Research and Training Program (CREATE) and Strategic Partnership Grant for Networks (SPG-N)
- SSHRC Partnership Grant (PG)
- Genome Canada and Genome Alberta
- Networks of Centres of Excellence (NCE) – calls for new networks and NCE-Knowledge Mobilization competitions. (IPD does not support funding programs offered by established NCE-funded networks.)
- Other institutional and quota-based programs as may arise, with process details distributed via funding opportunity emails to the “Research Communications” mailing list and listed on the university’s Funding Deadline Calendar.

CFI
- If you would like to lead a CFI project, it is recommended you speak first with your ADR as they will inform you of faculty- or school-specific processes for major CFI programs (e.g. Innovation Fund or the large “rounds,” Major Science Initiatives, and Cyberinfrastructure). These will involve institutional quota selection processes.
- If you have been asked to collaborate as a co-applicant on a CFI project led by another institution, the University of Calgary will be required to sign-off on any institutional commitments or requirements related to the project. It is recommended that you first speak with your Department or Institute Head and Associate Dean (Research) to discuss any faculty/school support required, such as space. Contact ipd@ucalgary.ca as soon as you are aware of the opportunity for collaboration so that required university reviews can be completed. IPD will facilitate all of these reviews (e.g. confirmation that space is available to house any proposed equipment, access to CFI envelope if required, other university-required risk assessments), and will secure institutional signatures as required.

NSERC CREATE and SPG-N, SSHRC-PG, Genome, NCE, and other institutional programs
At the University of Calgary, applications to the programs/agencies listed above are coordinated through IPD. If you are interested in applying for any of these programs as the primary investigator, contact your faculty’s research office, associate dean (research), or ipd@ucalgary.ca for more information about university processes. You should also regularly review the university’s research Funding Opportunities page (and the associated Funding Deadlines calendar) here.
If you have been invited to be a collaborator or co-applicant on a proposal led by a researcher at another institution, contact ipd@ucalgary.ca to learn more about what is required from the University of Calgary and funding agency for that specific program. University signatures required [including any Vice-President (Research) signature on letters of support] will be facilitated through IPD.

- With appropriate legal offices, review and approval of Inter-institutional Agreements (IIAs), memoranda of understanding, or similar agreements;
- Provision of institutional signatures;
- Review of budgets as required;
- Approval of expenditures and financial reporting;
- IOF distribution and reporting;
- Other internal assessments as may be required (e.g. regarding space to house infrastructure, etc.).
If your institution is the lead on a new CFI application, or a researcher at your institution is a co-applicant on an application led by the University of Calgary, please contact:

NSERC CREATE and SPG-N, SSHRC-PG, Genome, NCE, and other institutional programs
- IPD manages all pre-award administrative requirements associated with NSERC CREATE and SPG-N, and SSHRC-PG at the University of Calgary. IPD also manages the pre-award processes associated with new Networks of Centres of Excellence proposals and other NCE programs, but does not support funding called issued by existing NCE-funded networks. Finally, IPD coordinates most Genome Alberta and Genome Canada programs, and manages the university's participation in other quota-based or institutional granting programs. For these programs, IPD facilitates or advises on the following:
- With appropriate legal offices, review and approval of institutional agreements, memoranda of understanding, or similar agreements;
- Provision of institutional signatures;
- Confirmation of any institutional commitments;
- Review of budgets, where required;
- Review of and signatures required on institutional letters of support;
- Other internal assessments as may be required (e.g. regarding space to house infrastructure, etc.).
- If your institution is the lead on a new application, or a researcher at your institution is a co-applicant or collaborator on an application led by the University of Calgary, please contact ipd@ucalgary.ca.
