Indigenous Research Seed Funding Awards

One Child Every Child

The One Child Every Child (OCEC) Indigenous Research Seed Funding Awards are seedling awards funded through the Indigenous Ways of Knowing Accelerator.  

These awards are for scholars that are exploring new child health and wellness research with a focus on Indigenous peoples, organizations and/or communities.  

Ten awards of $10,000

The research must:

  • focus on Indigenous peoples, organizations, and/or communities;
  • focus on Indigenous methodologies;
  • be well-connected with Indigenous communities;
  • lead(s) are/include Indigenous scholars. 

Award funds may be used for, but not limited to:

  • initial community engagement
  • hiring research staff
  • support for literature review
  • grant writing
  • ceremonial protocol support
  • honoraria
  • visuals
  • early knowledge engagement/presentations with Indigenous community(ies)
  • travel to develop partnerships

Applications are reviewed at least twice a year

Candidate Eligibility

  • To be eligible, you must be an academic staff member, postdoctoral scholar, or doctoral student at the University of Calgary or one of the OCEC institutional partners (University of Alberta, University of Lethbridge or Athabasca University).
  • Doctoral students may apply with their supervisor as a project member. 
  • Academic staff members must hold an academic appointment: continuing, limited term, or contingent term. 
  • Preference will be given to Early Career Researchers (ECRs).  

OCEC and the Indigenous Ways of Knowing Accelerator are committed to ensuring that all scholars have equitable access to research funding and career support. Applicants from Indigenous and Equity-Deserving groups are highly encouraged to apply.  

One Child Every Child is a Canada-first research and translation initiative funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund, with a vision for all Canadian children to be the healthiest, most empowered and thriving in the world. Led by the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute at the University of Calgary, One Child Every Child brings together Indigenous partners, Canada’s child health research institutes, equity-deserving communities, local and national partners as well as global collaborators to dramatically improve the lives of children across Canada and beyond.
