Eligibility
1) Applications will be considered for research proposals that are directly relevant to human
respiratory health. Applications deemed outside the respiratory field will be eliminated from the
competition.
2) The principal investigator, who is considered the principal applicant, must hold a faculty
appointment at a Canadian university. The Lung organizations also accept applications from
post-doctoral fellows as the principal investigator. The other applicants (co-principal
investigator/co-principal applicant, co-investigators/co-applicants, and collaborators) are not
required to hold a faculty appointment. Research associates are not eligible to apply as the
principal investigator, although they may apply as a co-principal investigator or co-investigator.
3) The principal investigator must apply to the provincial Lung organization in the province where
they hold their faculty appointment. For example, a principal investigator from Alberta is only
eligible to apply to Alberta Lung.
4) An applicant may only submit one application as a principal investigator or co-principal
investigator per year.
5) A principal investigator or co-principal investigator can only hold one new LHRG award per
year.2
6) At the time of registration and for the duration of the award, the principal investigator, co-
principal investigator, co-investigator(s), and collaborator(s) are not eligible if they hold or have
held funding, directly or indirectly from the tobacco and/or cannabis and/or vaping industry.
7) An eligible institution through which the grant funds will be administered must be available and
the institution’s business registration number must be provided
Summary
The Lung Health Research Grants (LHRG) is a peer-reviewed competition that supports pulmonary research or development projects. Applications will be considered for research proposals that are directly relevant to human respiratory health.
The LHRG has two streams: Basic Science and Clinical Research. The applicant must identify the
appropriate stream so the application can be directed to the appropriate peer review committee.
Overhead is not an eligible expense for this grant.

Approvals
NOTE: Consult your Faculty Associate Dean (Research) (ADR) regarding Faculty-specific deadlines and submission processes.
Principal Investigators: Complete a Research Management System (RMS) record, including a copy of your complete application, and submit this for approvals in RMS.
Postdocs, students, and trainees: For fellowships and externally-sponsored research training awards or opportunities, you must complete the Research Funding Application Approval (RFAA) Trainee PDF form, and submit it, along with a complete copy of the application, to Research Services at rsotrainee@ucalgary.ca. Trainees should not use RMS at this time.
Approvals: The University of Calgary requires that all funding applications be approved prior to submission. Approval requires signatures via either RMS or the RFAA Trainee form, in the following order:
- Principal Investigator
- Department Head
- Faculty ADR/Dean
- Research Services (on behalf of the Vice-President Research)

Late submissions: Late submissions will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances. If you submit your RMS record to Research Services after the internal deadline has passed, you must secure additional approvals. Please read: Late Applications Process.

Submission Instructions:
- Complete Full Application at the online portal and save a pdf print preview copy.
- To initiate internal approvals, complete the Pre-Award/Application record in RMS (https://research.ucalgary.ca/conduct-research/additional-resources/resea...), attach your completed Application as downloaded from the website and all supporting documents, and submit for approvals from your department head and/or faculty Associate Dean (Research). *Important: when submitting in RMS, please ensure that you allow time for academic approvals prior to the Research Services review deadline of 12:00pm on Wednesday May 10, 2023
- Once these approvals are obtained, RMS will automatically forward the Application record to Research Services for institutional review and approval.
- Research Services will review, provide feedback (by email) if necessary, and will provide the institutional approval. RSO will provide the capping institutional signature and will advise when ready.
- The applicant must submit their application by completing the online submission form and uploading
all supporting documentation via https://my.reviewr.com/site/LHRG2023 by May 15, 2023 at 6PM Mountain time.
