Eligibility for Stream 1 - Provincial Network Applications:
For an application to be eligible for Stream 1 - Provincial Network grants, all the requirements stated below must be met:
- The Nominated Principal Applicant (NPA) must be a member of one of the existing 9 provincial IYS networks, as identified by CIHR: Foundry, Huddle, Youth Wellness Hubs Ontario (YWHO), Aire Ouverte, and the IYS Networks in Alberta, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Saskatchewan. Only one application per IYS Network will be allowed.
- The NPA must be an independent researcher affiliated with a Canadian post-secondary institution and/or its affiliated institutions (including hospitals, research institutes and other non-profit organizations with a mandate for health research and/or knowledge translation).
- The NPA must have their substantive role in Canada for the duration of the requested grant term. Should the NPA leave Canada, a new NPA must be identified.
- The institution paid must be within the geographic area covered by the Provincial Network associated with the NPA and be authorized to administer CIHR funds before the funding can be released (for more information see Administration of Funds).
- The NPA must be identified as the Data to Knowledge Champion, given their overall coordinating role in ensuring that data is used to answer questions and generate new and useful knowledge.
- The applicant team must be co-led by an individual who is a Decision Maker, listed as a Principal Knowledge User (PKU). Examples of this type of decision maker may include an Executive Director or Director of the IYS Network, a senior decision maker or director at the administrative host or backbone organization, a Ministry of Health or government policy maker, etc.
- To represent youth and caregiver/family perspectives who have lived and/or living experience relevant to IYS, the applicant team should be diverse and must include at least:
- two Youth team members listed as Knowledge Users (KUs), and
- two Caregiver/Family members listed as KUs.
- In addition to the criteria above, at least two additional team members must be listed as Knowledge Users. In the context of IYS, examples of knowledge users may include, but are not limited to:
- Service providers in IYS such as: physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, physiotherapists, psychologists, peer or family support workers, care navigators, Elders and/or Traditional Counsellors, or other health professionals/providers.
- Decision makers relevant to IYS such as: an Executive Director or Director of the Network, a senior decision maker or director at the administrative host or backbone organization, a Ministry of Health or government policy maker, etc.
- Community-based organizations or Indigenous health and well-being organizations.
- Among the applicant team members on the application, at least one team member must be identified for each of the roles below and be clearly identified as such in the Participant Table (See How to Apply section). These team members are expected to work with the NPA / Data to Knowledge Champion. Applicants are strongly encouraged to develop a diverse and equitable team. The roles below can be served by a Principal Applicant (PA), Co-Applicant, PKU or KU, who may hold other roles in addition to standing as those listed below:
- A Practice to Data Champion with expertise in clinical data management and/or data science.
- A Knowledge to Practice Champion who has experience developing and implementing integrated knowledge mobilization plans, and who has expertise in knowledge mobilization and implementation science.
- An Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Champion with expertise in sound EDI practices and principles, and experience in meaningful and culturally safe sex and gender-based analysis (SGBA) or gender diversity. See Additional Information for wise practices on including an EDI Champion and defining their potential roles in the network and for details on SGBA+.
- An Indigenous Research Champion who self-identifies as Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, or Métis), or provides evidence of having meaningful and culturally safe involvement with Indigenous Peoples (see How to Apply and Additional Information).
- The NPA and the EDI Champion must have completed one of the sex- and gender-based analysis training modules available online through the CIHR Institute of Gender and Health and have submitted a Certificate of Completion (see How to Apply).
- At least one Early Career Researcher (ECR) must be identified as a PA or NPA.
Eligibility for the Stream 1 - IYS Indigenous Network Application (N/A for UC applicants):
For an application to be eligible for the Stream 1 - IYS Indigenous Network grant, all the requirements stated below must be met:
- The Nominated Principal Applicant (NPA) must be a member of the existing IYS Indigenous Network as identified by CIHR. Only one application will be allowed.
Eligibility for Stream 2 - Development Grant Applications (N/A for UC applicants):
For an application to be eligible for Stream 2 - Development Grants, all the requirements stated below must be met:
- The Nominated Principal Applicant (NPA) must be involved in supporting an emerging IYS Network from one of these provinces/territories: Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Prince Edward Island, and Yukon.
Summary
To advance IYS in Canada, Canada's Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR), the Institute of Neurosciences Mental Health and Addiction (CIHR-INMHA), the Graham Boeckh Foundation (GBF) and the Bell-GBF Partnership and RBC Future Launch have come together to develop the Integrated Youth Services Network of Networks (IYS-Net) Initiative. IYS-Net builds off a previous partnership between SPOR and GBF started in 2012 (ACCESS Open Minds), which catalyzed IYS. In 2022, the majority of provinces/territories have developed, or are in the process of developing, an IYS network; an Indigenous Network has also been initiated, which includes ACCESS Open Minds sites. As part of these initiatives, most networks are developing 'backbone organizations' that support implementation and innovations in service delivery, and to coordinate efforts across the province/territory. There is now a clear opportunity to network all existing and emerging provincial/territorial IYS networks to strengthen research and knowledge mobilization capacity within and across networks, and ultimately to improve care and outcomes for youth and their caregivers/families. This will be achieved through multiple phases (see IYS-Net Phases and Timeline). Through this current funding opportunity (Phase 1), IYS-Net will begin to formalize the development of, and linkages between, all provincial, territorial, and Indigenous IYS networks.
The overarching objective of IYS-Net is to improve mental health services and outcomes for youth and their caregivers/families. This will be done by supporting pan-Canadian research, data and knowledge sharing across the IYS networks, thus enabling evidence-informed decision making that integrates research into practice and policy and strengthens each independent Learning Health System (LHS) network.
The specific objectives of Phase 1 are to:
- Continue to build and strengthen research and knowledge mobilization capacity within and across IYS networks, including among researchers, service providers, decision makers, and policy makers.
- Catalyze collaborations and knowledge sharing within and across IYS networks that will contribute evidence about best and wise practices regarding the development, implementation, policies, effectiveness, and ongoing monitoring of IYS in Canada, and using diverse research methods such as those based in Indigenous ways of knowing and engagement of youth and caregivers/families.
- Support the uptake of common data approaches and open science practices within and across IYS networks to support LHS networks, and to identify best and wise practices for LHSs in community-based settings.
- Facilitate effective and meaningful youth and caregiver/family engagement throughout all stages of the project, ensuring youth and caregivers/families, as well as providers and policy makers, all play key roles.

Postdocs, students, and trainees: For fellowships and externally-sponsored research training awards or opportunities, you must complete the Research Funding Application Approval (RFAA) Trainee PDF form, and submit it, along with a complete copy of the application, to Research Services at rsotrainee@ucalgary.ca. Trainees should not use RMS at this time.
Approvals: The University of Calgary requires that all funding applications be approved prior to submission. Approval requires signatures via either RMS or the RFAA Trainee form, in the following order:
- Principal Investigator
- Department Head
- Faculty ADR/Dean
- Research Services (on behalf of the Vice-President Research)
