Eligibility
For an application to be eligible, all the requirements stated below must be met:
- To fulfill the tripartite leadership requirements of this funding opportunity, the application must include three primary applicants (including the Nominated Principal Applicant, Principal Applicant, or Principal Knowledge User), one in each of the following categories:
- A Canadian non-governmental organization (including community organizations and regional health authorities) with a research or knowledge translation mandate in women's health. Organizations working primarily with Indigenous, racialized, elderly, youth, immigrant, sexual and gender minority and/or disability communities or demonstrating evidence of having prior meaningful and culturally safe involvement with these communities are especially encouraged to apply.
- A point of contact in a senior leadership position at the organization must be identified in the application form in the role of Principal Applicant, Principal Knowledge user, Co-Applicant, Knowledge User, or Collaborator. Although a point of contact must be identified in the application, it is the organization itself that co-leads the proposed work and thus must be included as one of the three Principal Applicants forming the tripartite leadership.
- Organizations that are unclear about their eligibility to apply are encouraged to contact CIHR's Contact Centre for clarification.
- An independent researcher in women's health affiliated with a Canadian postsecondary institution and/or its affiliated institutions (including hospitals, research institutes and other non-profit organizations with a mandate for health research and/or knowledge translation) by the application deadline.
- A healthcare provider in women's health affiliated with a Canadian postsecondary institution and/or its affiliated institutions (including hospitals, research institutes and other non-profit organizations with a mandate for health research and/or knowledge translation) and holding an active Canadian license to practice as a health professional by the application deadline.
Note: As the goal is to include a diversity of perspectives in the team that is being assembled, members of the tripartite leadership cannot be located at the same institution or organization.
- Each member of the tripartite leadership must have their substantive role in Canada for the duration of the requested grant term.
- The Institution Paid must be authorized to administer CIHR funds before the funding can be released (see Administration of Funds).
- A member of the tripartite leadership team must have successfully completed one of the sex- and gender-based analysis training modules available online through the CIHR Institute of Gender and Health and have submitted a Certificate of Completion. Select and complete the training module most applicable to your project. Applicants are encouraged to review the "How to integrate sex and gender in research" section on the CIHR website. See How to Apply for more details.
*Organizations as NPAs: For organizations applying as the NPA, a representative of the organization must complete the training module on the organization's behalf. - The application must also identify a Knowledge Mobilization (KM) Champion who has experience developing and implementing integrated approaches to knowledge mobilization that are inclusive and support equitable and sustainable partnerships.
- The KM Champion may hold other roles on the team.
- The KM Champion role can be fulfilled by any project participant including Nominated Principal Applicant, Principal Applicant, and Principal Knowledge User.
- An individual or an organization cannot submit more than one application as the Nominated Principal Applicant. If the Nominated Principal Applicant submits more than one application, CIHR will automatically withdraw the last application(s) submitted based on the timestamp of submission.
Note: Other than the requirements outlined above, there are no additional requirements for the applicant team of the Coordinating Centre. This differs from the eligibility of the hubs.
Additional Team Members (optional):
- Should the tripartite leadership want additional members within their applicant team, these members could include:
- A Person or patient with lived experience in women's health
- A Trainee, registered at a Canadian post-secondary institution (or affiliate) studying women's health
- A Early career researcher at a Canadian post-secondary institution or an affiliate, at the time of the application date, working in women's health.
- A Person who can speak to the perspectives of Indigenous Women and Two-Spirited People. The person should self-identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, or Métis) and/or demonstrates a track record of meaningful and culturally safe involvement with Indigenous Peoples. Submission of a completed standardized form comprising of answering one question and/or filling out a paragraph describing how they meet this requirement is required, if this perspective is included. See Task: Download Supplemental Application Material to obtain form (see How to Apply section).
- A Healthcare provider in women's health, in addition to the Healthcare Provider member of tripartite leadership. The healthcare provider must hold an active Canadian license to practice as a health professional at the time of application. Healthcare provider is to be listed as Knowledge User.
- A Canadian non-governmental organization (community organization and regional health authorities) in women's health, in addition to the Organization member of tripartite leadership. Organizations that are unclear about their eligibility to apply are encouraged to contact CIHR's Contact Centre for clarification.
Notes:
- With the goal of forming a team with diverse perspectives, it is encouraged that each additional team member represents only one category and not be affiliated with the same institution or organization as the members of the tripartite leadership team.
Summary
The National Women's Health Research Initiative (NWHRI) is composed of two funding streams: The Pan-Canadian Women's Health Coalition (herein called the Coalition) and the Innovation Fund.
The Coalition, comprised of hubs and an overarching Coordinating Centre, aims to maximize the visibility and impact of women's health research and practice in Canada, committing to the principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and Indigenous Rights. The funding opportunity for the hubs was launched in 2022 and it is expected that the successfully funded hubs will be announced in July 2023. The current funding opportunity is accepting applications for the Coordinating Centre.
Note: Applying for hubs' funding does not preclude applying for the Coordinating Centre funding, nor is there a requirement to be a hub grantee to apply to the current funding opportunity.
The Coordinating Centre, together with the hubs, will work to mobilize new and existing knowledge in women's health into effective, gender-sensitive, and culturally appropriate women's health services across Canada. The specific roles and responsibilities of the Coordinating Centre were informed by discussions at the Ideas Fair and Learning Circle. The Coordinating Centre is expected to collaborate with each hub, as well as across the hubs, to develop a symbiotic approach to identifying and implementing solutions to pan-Canadian challenges in women's health. This approach will be based on the governance plan that will be developed by the Coordinating Centre in collaboration with the hubs once the successful Coordinating Centre is in place.
