Royal Society of Canada Awards

Eligibility

Candidates cannot apply on their own behalf. To be eligible for an RSC award, candidates shall be Canadian citizens or have had status for at least three years as Canadian Permanent Residents at the time of their nomination.

Summary

The RSC administers over 20 prestigious awards in recognition of outstanding achievement.

Available for nomination this year:

Bancroft Award - For instruction and research in the science of geology.

Flavelle Medal - For meritorious achievement in biological science.

Innis-Gérin Medal - For a distinguished and sustained contribution to the literature of the social sciences.

J.B. Tyrrell Historical Medal - For outstanding work in the history of Canada.

John L. Synge Award - Outstanding research in any of the branches of the mathematical sciences.

Lorne Pierce Medal - For an achievement in critical or imaginative literature.

McLaughlin Medal - Important research of sustained excellence in medical science.

Michael P. Païdoussis Medal - Recognition of an individual who has made outstanding contributions to research, education and leadership in applied mechanics.

Miroslaw Romanowski Medal - Scientific work relating to environmental problems.

Rutherford Memorial Medals - Outstanding research in physics and in chemistry.

Ursula Franklin Award in Gender Studies - For contributions to furthering our understanding of issues concerning gender.

Willet G. Miller Medal - For outstanding research in earth sciences and ocean & atmospheric sciences.

Yvan Allaire Medal - Outstanding contribution in governance of public and private organizations.

Institutional Nominations (Optional)

The President of the University of Calgary may nominate a candidate for a Medal or Award. The SUPPORT: Research Awards committee will review requests for Presidential nominations and make a recommendation to the Vice-President (Research) and President.

The following documents must be submitted for SUPPORT review:

1. a 1-page draft of the detailed appraisal (see below)
2. the candidate's CV.

The Faculty's lead for awards (e.g., chair of awards committee) or Associate Dean (Research) must submit both documents to the Research Services Office (researchawards@ucalgary.ca) by January 10.

Approved nominations will be encouraged to submit a complete draft to SUPPORT for detailed feedback prior to submission to RSC.

SUPPORT: Research Awards Committee

The SUPPORT: Research Awards Committee is now available to review and provide feedback to strengthen nominations for major research prizes and awards and advise on the suitability of award nominations. SUPPORT will also review the CV of a potential nominee and advise on their suitability for nomination at this time.

If you wish for the SUPPORT: Research Awards committee to review and provide feedback on a nomination package, please include:

• a citation (see below - item 4)
• a detailed appraisal of the candidate's record (see below - item 5)
• an up-to-date CV (see below - item 7)

If additional components of the nomination package are available by the SUPPORT deadline, the committee would be pleased to review all available materials.

A complete nomination consists of the following elements

1. Nomination form
2. Letter of nomination from the Primary Nominator
3. Citation (max 70 words)
4. Detailed appraisal (max 1200 words)
5. Three letters of reference (max 750 words per letter)
6. Three bio from referees (max 250 words)
7. Curriculum Vitae (max 20 pages)

Nominations must be submitted by email no later than March 15th, 2024 at 8:00pm (Eastern time). Dossiers are to be submitted via email to nominations@rsc-src.ca.
