Eligibility
All eligible Alberta-based organizations and/or individuals with a project, initiative and/or research that will benefit the health of Albertans or improve their care are encouraged to apply. The primary recipient of funds must be a nonprofit, non-government agency, academic organization/individual, charitable organization or community group. We value enhanced partnerships, so collaborations at ANY level are strongly encouraged.
Summary
In May 2021 CPSA Council passed a motion to allocate $5 million from CPSA’s
Building Fund Reserve to support projects, initiatives, and/or research to benefit
Albertans. These funds are intended to be used by Alberta-based organizations
and/or individuals in a manner that provides direct and demonstrable benefit to
Albertans’ health or improve their care.
Nine principles have been established to guide all funds allocations. Submissions
must meet all nine principles to be considered.
1. Funds will only be provided to Alberta-based organizations/individuals and
need to be utilized on projects/initiatives that will directly benefit the health
or care of Albertans
2. The primary recipient of funds must be a NPO, non-government agency,
academic organization/individual, charitable organization, or community
group
3. Funded projects/initiatives must provide evidence of being sustainable once
the CPSA funds have been utilized
4. Only one funding application call will take place, the granting period for the
funds will be no longer than 3 years, and funds must begin to be applied
within one year of receipt
5. Funded projects/initiatives must be aligned with at least one of CPSA’s five
strategic directions (highest quality, compassionate care; enhanced
partnerships; proactive and innovative approach; anti-racism and anti-
discrimination; or authentic Indigenous connections)
6. Projects/Initiatives that include broad collaborations across sectors and
organizations are preferred
7. Projects/Initiatives must have established criteria for evaluation
8. Applicants will have to select to submit in one of three categories
- a. Small Grant - $50,000 - $100,000
- b. Medium Grant - $100,001 - $1,000,000
- c. Large Grant - $1,000,001 - $2,500,000
9. Funds cannot be used for expenditures that are capital in nature (e.g.,
building construction, renovations, improvements, capital equipment,
hardware, software, vehicles, etc.); those related to overhead (e.g., rent,
electricity); or those related to the general operations and administration of
the host organization including travel outside of Alberta
Overhead is not applicable for this opportunity.

Approvals
NOTE: Consult your Faculty Associate Dean (Research) (ADR) regarding Faculty-specific deadlines and submission processes.
Principal Investigators: Complete a Research Management System (RMS) record, including a copy of your complete application, and submit this for approvals in RMS.
Postdocs, students, and trainees: For fellowships and externally-sponsored research training awards or opportunities, you must complete the Research Funding Application Approval (RFAA) Trainee PDF form, and submit it, along with a complete copy of the application, to Research Services at rsotrainee@ucalgary.ca. Trainees should not use RMS at this time.
Approvals: The University of Calgary requires that all funding applications be approved prior to submission. Approval requires signatures via either RMS or the RFAA Trainee form, in the following order:
- Principal Investigator
- Department Head
- Faculty ADR/Dean
- Research Services (on behalf of the Vice-President Research)
Read the Meaning of Grant Signatures policy to understand what your approval means. Please see the agency guidelines for details about which signatures are required on your application, as it may differ from internal requirements.
Late submissions: Late submissions will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances. If you submit your RMS record to Research Services after the internal deadline has passed, you must secure additional approvals. Please read: Late Applications Process.
Additional Information
Applications are submitted through the Research Management System (RMS) to initiate internal approvals. Please note, when the RMS record finally reaches Research Services by the internal deadline, it should contain all the relevant Department and Faculty approvals, so please allow additional time for these steps. Late applications will only be accepted in cases of medical or family emergencies, or other exceptional circumstances. If you submit your RMS record to Research Services after the internal deadline has passed, you will need to secure additional late approvals from your Faculty Associate Dean (Research) and the Executive Director, Research Services. A link to RMS can be found here which includes training resources.
Nothing needs to be submitted to RSO for the EOI stage, as it is not competitive.
Full Proposal:
- Upload a copy of your final and complete application to the RMS Application record, and submit for academic approvals. Please ensure that you allow enough time for academic approvals prior to the Research Services (RSO) final internal deadline of NOON, February 23 2023. Please note this is a hard deadline. Exceptions will only be made with the approval of your faculty Associate Dean (Research).
- RSO will provide institutional sign-off on the Proposal Submission form and internal approvals in RMS. RMS will notify you that institutional approval has been provided and the completed signature page will be attached.
*** Please note that the Proposal Submission Form requires the PI to sign as well as an authorized representative of the institution. Please use the Proposal Submission Form prepared by Research Services
3. Full Proposals must be submitted to Grants@cpsa.ab.ca with the subject line: “Proposal CPSA Healthier Albertan Grant“ by 4PM Mountain time on February 28, 2023.
To ensure all submissions are evaluated objectively, CPSA will employ an anonymous submission process. All organizations and/or individuals applying must submit two versions of their proposal: one with identifying information, and one without identifying information.
